Dorcas Ashford was born on 12 March 1815 in Carroll, Tennessee, to Jane King, age 31, and John B. Ashford, age 36. She married George Washington Cooper on March 7, 1839, when she was 24 years old.[1] They had eight children together during their marriage. Her husband, George Washington Cooper died about 1854 when Dorcas was 33 years old. She married Thomas Lamar sometime between 1860 and 1870 probably in Hardin County, Illinois. She died on December 3, 1893, in Paducah, Kentucky, when she was 72 years old, and she was buried at Soward Cemetery in Hardin County, Illinois.

She had $150 value of livestock and 20 lbs. of wool. One person was in militia.[2]

On August 16th, Dorcas Cooper, age 50, widow, was enumerated as the head of household with 50 dollars in value of personal estate. Also in her household were Carrol Cooper, age 15, Langdon Cooper, age 13, Mary A Cooper, age 11, Geo W Cooper, age 9, and Noah L Cooper, age 7.[3]

On June 3rd, Dorcas Lamar, age 48, born in Virginia, was enumerated in household of Thomas Lemar, age 52, farmer laborer born in Indiana. Also in home were Noah Lamar, age 14, farm laborer, born in Illinois, and Rada Lamar, age 10, born in Illinois.[4]

On June 29th, Dorcas Lamar, age 52, born in Virginia, was enumerated in the household of her husband, Thomas Lamar, age 62, farmer, born in Indiana. Also in home were her daughter, Zorada Cooper, age 19, born in Illinois, and Joseph Cockrum, age 15, farm worker, born in Kentucky.[5]
