Bertha Lee Ash was born in 1936 in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, United States. She is the daughter of CharlieAsh Sr. and Ina Clay Ash.

On August 16, 1953, Bertha Ash married Ike Bruce in Wakulla County, Florida.^{[1] [2]} The couple divorced on April 4, 1972 in Leon County.^[3] The couple are the parents of the following known children:

• Ina Cassandra Bruce, who married a Abdrabu
• Ike Bruce, Jr.
• Andre Bruce
• Bobby Bruce
• Louise Brown
• John R. Bruce

Bertha Bruce passed away in 2013. Her obitruary, published in the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper on November 28,^[4] reads as follows:

"Bertha Lee Ash Bruce, 77, of Tallahassee, went to rest in her Savior's arms, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, November 22, 2013. Services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Desota Field Cemetery. Viewing-visitation is 3-7:30 p.m. Friday with Alpha Kappa Alpha rites, 7:00 p.m. at Tillman of Tallahassee. A native and lifelong Tallahassee resident, Mrs. Bruce was a retired public school educator, having taught in Sopchoppy, Havana and Greensboro. She was a devoted member of Tabernacle and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Kappa Omega Chapter. Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Ike Bruce, Sr., parents, Charlie Sr. and Ina Clay Ash; brothers, Clarence Range, Charlie Jr., John and Tony Ash and a sister, Pauline Abernathy."

Bertha Lee Ash-Bruce is buried in the DeSoto Field Cemetery in Tallahassee. A gravestone marks her burial site.^[5]
