John William Arnold was an American merchant, politician and soldier. Arnold was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. Arnold was a member of the Illinois State Senate representing Illinois 15th District.

John was born on February 14, 1842, in White Creek, New York. He was the son of John Harrington Arnold and Lucinda (Vail) Arnold. [1]
On September 7, 1861, John W. Arnold, age 20, enlisted in the 4th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry. He mustered in as a Private in Company D, September 26, 1861. [2]
While with the 4th Cavalry, Private Arnold saw combat at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson and at the Battle of Shiloh. After Shiloh, the regiment kept busy scouting the front. It led the van in a raid on Purdy and the railroad, capturing the train. [3] On August 1, 1862, Arnold was discharged for disability. [2]
After Arnold recovered, he enlisted again. John W. Arnold, age 21, was 5 foot 9 inches tall with dark hair, blue eyes, and a dark complexion. Arnold, a Chicago resident, listed his occupation as soldier. He was born in New York. On August 24, 1862, He mustered in as a Private on August 29, 1862. [4]
At the Battle of Mansfield, Private Arnold was captured by Confederate forces. For 14 months, Arnold was a Prisoner of War at Camp Ford, Texas. [5]
Private Arnold mustered out of service of the 4th Cavalry on June 16, 1865. [4]
On December 22, 1869, John W. Arnold married Abigail L. Mathewson in Will County, Illinois. [6]
In 1888, Arnold was elected postmaster of Lockport. In 1890, Arnold was elected to the Illinois State Senate serving 2 terms. President Grover Cleveland appointed Arnold as Marshal of the Northern District of Illinois. He served 4 years as U.S. Marshall. After which, Arnold returned to Lockport and dealt in real estate. [5]
John W Arnold served as post commander of the F. L. Gooding Post #401 Grand Army of the Republic. [5]
John W Arnold passed away in 1926. He was buried at Lockport Cemetery, Lockport, Illinois. [1]
