The death occurred yesterday afternoon of Mrs Eleanor Ann Jordan, a resident of Tauranga for sixty three years. Mrs Jordan was the widow of the late Rev. Canon Charles Jordan, and was the oldest resident of Tauranga, being in her 100th year. Mrs. Jordan was born in Kingscourt, County Cavan, Ireland, and was the eldest child of Dr. Joseph Armstrong. Her family afterwards moved to County Kerry, where Mrs Jordan was married to Rev. Canon Jordan and resided there until the family proceeded to New Zealand in 1872. After arriving in New Zealand Canon Jordan proceeded to Tauranga and took over Holy Trinity Parish, to which he had been appointed by the Commissaries of the then Bishop of Waiapu, Rev. Dr. William Williams, and remained in charge of the parish until he passed away in October, 1912. Mrs Jordan continued to live at the old vicarage, and always took a keen and active interest in the affairs of the Church of England. For many years she was prominently identified with the Ladies Guild, which was instituted by her and did splendid work in advancing the interests of the church in numerous ways. Mrs Jordan attended the sixtieth anniversary celebrations of Holy Trinity Church last month and had the distinction of being the oldest parishioner present. During her long life her health was remarkably good and she was always able to take an interest in her garden, enjoying a walk through her grounds as late as Sunday last. She was taken ill on Monday and gradually grew weaker, passing away as above stated. Mrs Jordan possessed a fine personality and was always ready and willing to assist those in need, having been one of the founders of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society, which worked in alleviating distress before the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was established.
Mrs Jordan is survived by one son, Mr Charles Jordan, and two daughters, Mrs H. H. Clemson and Mrs G. G. Norris. Two sons, Messrs James and Joseph Jordan, and one daughter Mrs A, T. Pittar (Auckland), pre-deceased their mother. Mr B. G. Armstrong, senr., of Te Puna is a brother and Mrs W. Bell, of Wellington, and Mrs W. Simpson, of Waitotara. are sisters. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the family in their bereavement.
The funeral will leave Holy Trinity Church at 4.15 on Sunday afternoon for the new cemetery.[2]
