James served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946.^[3]

In the 1950 census James (age 24), Janitor, was the never married son of Earnest W Armstead in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas, United States.^[4]

James died on 2 December 1987 and was buried in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, United States.^[5]
