Biography

John Armistead was born on 14 Mar 1774 in Buckingham county, Virginia to John Armistead and Elizabeth Oslin. He was baptized Mar 14, 1774 in Cartersville, Cumberland, Virginia

John married Keziah Anderson in 1797 in Cumberland, Virginia, USA. The couple had 9 children: Elizabeth Armistead, William Armistead, John Anderson Armistead, Nathaniel Armistead, James Anderson Armistead, Frances Armistead, Susannah Armistead, Nancy Ann Armistead and Keziah Monroe Armistead. [1]

Married 2) Mrs. Amy (Powell) Owen in 1818.

Lived in Oglethorpe Co., GA (1800, 1810 censuses and 1818 marriage record), Greene Co., GA (1820 census) and Walton Co., GA. (1830 and 1850 census).

Following the death of his second wife Amy in 1850, he lived with his son James Anderson Armistead in Newton County during the last years of his life.

John had somewhere between 14 and 17 children by his two wives, but only 11 were still alive at the time of his death.

He served as a "private" during the War of 1812 from Oglethorpe county, Georgia in Capt. Burwell Pope's company attached to Lt. Col. Jetright Thomas' 2d Georgia militia. He received bounty land based on this service.

John died on 15 Nov 1856. He was buried in Armistead Family Cemetery, Alcovy, Newton County, Georgia, United States with a death date of 15 November 1856.[2] His will had to be adjudicated by the Supreme Court of Georgia.

According to my mother, our family is descended from a "John Armistead born March 14th, 1774 at Cartersville, Cumberland, VA and died November, 1856 in Walton Country, Ga., so he is the first to come south. He married Keziah Anderson and they had seventeen children. She was born 1777." This is all that my mother records.

Message: My brick wall is verifying who is the father of John Armistead (war 1812) b. March 14, 1774 in Cumberland Co., VA; died Walton Co., GA on November 15, 1856.
Married (1) Keziah Anderson 1797 in Cumberland County, VA. She apparently died before he left VA. She was daughter of Nathaniel Anderson & Susannah. John emigrated to Oglethorpe County, Georgia in 1798, thence to Walton Co. GA He married (2) Amy Owens. I have links forward to my father & many lines back behind John, but no proof of John's father.

Slaves

Birth records for the following individuals are listed in John's family Bible.

John was in a tax record in 1850 showing that he held 8 enslaved people in Walton, Georgia, United States.[3]

According to cousin John Davis, Isaac (1786-) is presumed to be the "1 male 64" in the 1850 slave schedule for Walton County. There is also an unidentified female, 64 (Polly?), and an unidentified male, 45.
