Edward Arbuthnot migrated from Scotland to Mauritius.

Edward was born in 1809. He was the son of William Arbuthnot and Anne Alves.[1]

He was educated at balliol college, Oxford and rowed in the first boat-race against Cambridge in 1829. Owned large sugar plantations.

He married Harriet Frances Staveley in. June 1837 in St James Cathedral, Port Louis, Mascarene Island, Mauritius.

They had 11 children. G He died in 1868.

Arbuthnot, Edward James, 6s, William, of Edinburgh, bart. BALLIOL COLL matric 1 Jun 1897, age 18. See Foster's Baronetage.[2]

A member of the Oxford crew in the first boat race in 1829.[3]

Research Notes

The following was stated on the marriage record for James's son: Following data of subsequent marriage not part of this transcription. Data obtained from The Gentleman's Magazine 1862: Marriage - 1862 Dec. 23. At Mauritius, Charles Edmund Banks, esq., Secretary to the Council, eldest son.of John Tatam Banks, esq.,M.D., of Worthlodge, near Crawley, Sussex, to Mary Rose Dawkins (née Arbuthnot), eldest dau. of the Hon. James Edward Arbuthnot, of Bon Air, Mauritius.

On his son's marriage record[5] it is recorded that James was the Manager of the Oriental Bank at the time. Upon researching have found the following source for The Oriental Bank[6].
