- The name Hans Jurgen Appel, during the period up to the death of Adriana Smit's husband in 1766, without reference to Adriana, could be found in one instance:
- 15 April 1719: In the inventory of Anna Kleef, a farm called "Vredenburg, gelegen in 't zogenaamde Moddergat", sold to a Hans Jurgen Appel, is listed as part of her estate's assets: Een plaats genaamt Vredenburg, gelegen in 't zogenaamde Moddergat verkocht aan Hans Jurgen Appel voor de s:a van 1700.[10] Anna Kleef was related to the Appels via Catharina Appel, sister of Jurrien / Hans Jurgen, her marriage to Adriaan Nel. [11]
- The name Hans Jurrien Appel, according to Delia Robertson: The First Fifty Years Project, without citing a source,[12] had also been connected to Joannes Appel, brother of Ferdinandus Appel: 11 February 1713, the name of Joannes was written in the record as Hans Jurrien Appel. [12]
- Thus the only candidates as this Hans Jurgen Appel at 1719 could be Joannes,[12] who would have been 59 years old at the time, or Jurrien Appel, who would have been 25 years old at the time.[11] Christoffel Coetzee de Villiers' Hans Jurgen Appel, if born 1712, would have been 7 years old at the time and likely not be involved in the purchase of a farm at such an age. [11]
- Other than Anna Kleef, "Moddergat" searches pre 1766 on Inventories of the Orphan Chamber, Cape Town Archives Repository, South Africa yields three individuals connected to the place:
- Johannes Bocklenbergh, estate inventory dated 22 June 1709. Johannes Bocklenbergh was related to Adriana Smit's family via her uncle, Johannes Smit. [13]
- Zacharia Jansz Visser, estate inventory dated 13 April 1722. Zacharia Jansz Visser was grandmother of Jurrien Appel's partner, Eva Niemand. [14]
- Jan Nieman, estate auction roll dated 12 September 1744. Jan Nieman was Jurrien Appel's partner, Eva Niemand's father. [15]
