Biography

Catherine (Anenontha) Annennontak was a Canadian First Peoples and member of the Wyandot Nation.

CATHERINE ANENONTA

Father : NICOLAS ANENONTA
Mother : JEANNE OTRIHOUANDET
Birth : vers 1649 bourg de ste-madeleine, par. de la conception, pays des hurons
Baptism : vers 1649 bourg de ste-madeleine, par. de la conception, pays des hurons[1]

Catherine's exact date of birth is unknown, but has been estimated to be between January and March 16, 1649, the day her father died. Her parents had been converted to christianity by French missionaries.

On March 16, 1649, more than 2000 Iroquois warriors invaded the Huron villages. On this day, the village of Sainte-Madeleine fell. All Huron warriors were killed, including Nicolas Arendanki, Catherine's father.

Infant Catherine was able to escape this massacre with her mother. She found refuge on Ile St-Joseph where the missionaries built a fort, named Sainte-Marie. The winter of 1649-50 was atrocious with many survivors of the tribe perishing.

On July 25, 1650, the remaning survivors arrived in Québec. A little less than a year later, a new mission was built for them on the Isle d'Orléans. In July of 1654, Catherine's mother passed away. Several days later, orphan Catherine was brought to the Ursuline convent in Québec. She stayed in the convent until her first marriage at the age of 13 and a half.[2]
