Biography

The father and three children (James, Samuel, Isaac, and Joseph) landed in Melbourne on July 13 1854 on the ship 'Norwood' from Liverpool. He was one of twin boys who married sisters in the same year 1860. He married Sarah Martin on 25th October 1860 at Tinonee. The original home was 'Coleraine' on the Hastings River. After Sarah's early death, he moved to the Manning River District where he married Mrs. Elizabeth Belford (nee Robinson). There were no children from this marriage.

Around 1862 the twins went on a 'land prospecting tour' to the Hastings, where they were successful in securing places suitable for farming. These sites were dense scrub which was eventually cleared. In 1863 they settled on a property named 'Coleraine' east of Wauchope. Sarah and Isaac had eight children.

They lived on the property "Coleraine" for a number of years before moving across the Hastings River to the property known as "Ruthven Hill", near Sandy Point in Ennis, after renting "Coleraine".

His wife Sarah was a very caring woman, always helping others and her death on 5th June, 1877 when she was forty years-old, was brought about by carrying out one of her many good deeds. She walked through swampy terrain from her home to "Wauchope House" to help Mrs. Joseph Andrews with her sick child, and on her way home Sarah was caught in a heavy downpour of rain and caught pneumonia. She left a family of eight children ranging in age from sixteen years to six weeks. The baby, Elizabeth (Bessie), was reared by Mrs. Thomas Avery (Mary Martin) and the other children were reared by different aunts until they were old enough to go out to work or get married. Miss Bessie Andrews, the youngest of Sarah's children was a lovely person and when her eldest sister, Jane Graham, died in child-birth in her late thirties, Bessie went to live at the Graham home and reared all the Graham children including Jane's one-day old baby, Jenny.

The original home at "Coleraine" was typical of the period with a shingle roof and a deep well at the back of the house. The well provided the family with an inexhaustible supply of fresh clean water, and later, it also provided a plentiful supply of water for use at the Wauchope Butter Factory, as well as the Veneer Mill when the Blue Creek water supply failed. After Sarah's death, Isaac moved to the Manning River District where he married Mrs. Belford (nee Robinson). There were no children from this marriage. Isaac was born about 1845. He passed away about 1906.
