He was a ships carpenter (as per marriage notice) but he died in an accident during construction of a railway bridge, hence the description as 'railway servant' in the younger Duncan's death certificate.

Accident was on Monday the 19 Jan 1846 at the railway bridge under construction over the river May in Forteviot, Perth, Scotland.[1]
By the 12 Feb 1846 a newspaper article indicates he has passed away leaving a widow and several children.[2]
Died before 1851 Scottish Census where his wife is noted as being a widow. She is also noted as being a widow on the 1881 census.
