Hi Shaun. Thanks for the note regarding Paul Snook's editing on profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jaubert-4. I have had issues with Paul before as he seems to have little regard for other people's work and looking at the changes he made to the profile, I agree with your points. I have therefore restored the profile to the point prior to his destructive editing.
It would seem based on a discussion I had with him, that he uses the auto bio tool on a biography which creates a singular narrative based on the information on the profile and the sources in the profile. Then he hand merges the things the tool leaves out back in by hand. Unfortunately this process is error prone and is not really a good idea on well established profiles as the amount of editing needed afterwards to get it back to the South African projects style of working is substantial especially considering the subsections and inline referencing can get quite complicated. Anyone unfamiliar with the project's style of working or unwilling to follow its style ultimately causes some havoc and this leads to unintentional loss of sourcing, formatting and vital information.

I noticed that you are using unsourced family tree links to create Pre-1700 profiles. It’s very important to read and understand Pre-1700 Profiles, please review this page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines on that page.
Laura
PS: Please check your suggestions. The project banner on your profile is only for profiles managed by a project.
Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This is a courtesy email to share the After Adopting Orphans FAQ which explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.
If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.
Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources; find or merge duplicates; clean up GEDCOM or merged biographies; or interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!
Hi Shaun, I corrected your baptism transcription on Strydom-623 into Strijdom (the y spelling was not usual for Dutch in those days [even still today] - if you look at the Witness by the same surname the spelling becomes clear). Adapted the maintenance category accordingly.
Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.
Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.
Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).
Hi again Shaun, thanks for correcting my typos on the profile of Du_Plessis-355. I integrated the bio of the daugther Du_Plessis-969 in collatory fashion and added the maintenance category [ [Category:Cape_of_Good_Hope_Project_Needs_Document_Image] ] so that an image can be uploaded and compared to the transcription. All profiles between 1652 and the end of 1806 in this project eventually get project profile protection. I saw that here on the profile of Putter-104 you had removed information of another contribuant. Please be careful in doing any such deletion. Though you did explain and though the contribuant did not provide enough validation for putting it there, it not done to merely remove the data of others. Also in the case of baptisms - we do not know if it is meant here Stellenbosch the town (then) or the repository (now). Edit: Bio integrated. I see now that the removal was of your own data. Which can also be problematic. Because in the bigger scheme of things (sources and comparing them) you see now that your baptism date agrees with that of another source. Anyhow, I will have a quick look if I can find the baptism. Edit: I found a transcript of the baptism here: https://www.eggsa.org/cgi-bin/dosearchBaptisms.pl (searched on surname only and then scrolled through + 40 results).
Thanks, I was looking all last night and this morning. I removed it when I couldn't find it because it was from me and I didn't want to contribute bad data but I agree it is better to have a clue even if referenced as unsourced and noted as such. Also, I forgot that the repository for one place could hold info from other regions. I remember seeing in the catalogues that the Stellenbosch repository held records from around Africa.
I [re-]integrated the profile of Du_Plessis-355 according to the protocols of our Cape of Good Hope and South African Roots projects, where collation has the preference above narration and where the contributions of other members are not divorced from the sources, so that 'reading' the validity of data becomes less of an effort. Using your source (I added you WikiTree-name {url}), I uploaded the baptism image to the profile, and also provided a full transcription of the record. The transcription proves that the currrent spelling of the LNAB is correct. The profile is ready to be project profile protected now.
On editing profiles you can use the 'C' directly above the window for editing (in open editing mode) in the ribbon to the far right. Replace the <ref> at the front of the citation with <ref name=SHAUN> and then replace subsequent whole references pertaining to the same facts and source completely with <ref name=SHAUN/> - and always [in this project] sign with your WikiTree name and the date.
Thanks will try stick to something similar to that. I must admit I find it far more time consuming adding info than on FamilySearch (mainly because pre-indexed data makes it quick to add new a referenced profile linked to all members, also it's search to prevent dupes seems to handle variant spellings more easily and the suggestions of other sources makes it very easy to find proof). I saw what you did for the changes when people added the name but I couldn't figure out how to get to that information even when I looked at the change log.
Hi Shaun, though you've been a member now for a few months already, here is a belated warm South African welcome to WikiTree!
As you have seen by now many of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eigtheenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made. Many have also been validated with primary sources. Some have not, and many still need sources, and many of the bio's need ordening. Thanks for adding sources to the profile of Du_Plessis-355, the bio of which I haven't finished integrating yet since 29 March of last year (!). I will edit it now to show how we do it as a project.
Here is some general information:
Duplicates, which are problematic because they cause a lot of unnecessary work for all inlvolved, should be avoided at all cost. When you create profiles, the system won't show duplicates already existing when the LNAB's (LastNameAtBaptism/Birth) are spelled in different ways. You need to search manually first, sort by date, and then find the already existing profiles. A few handy links to get you started:

You can also add tags for locations or interests - explore the project link for these. Tags link you to the community sourcing & research options, to add more tags (you can have 20) go to your tags.
Thanks, I am slowly getting started on this. I uploaded a GEDCOM and started doing the matching. It does take some time as I don't have up to date info all in one place, but I'm sure I'll get up to speed soon.
Thanks for signing the Honor Code, Shaun. I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the last several years.
One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

Thanks for the note on the banner I had put the wrong template there. Converted it to a sticker now.
Thanks for the reminder to put in the sources, I have gone back and put in the information sources that I do have.
