John William grew up in the Lafayette County, Mississippi area, served briefly in the Civil War before a disease caused his discharge, then moved to Franklin County, AR after the war with his family. He farmed around the White Oak area until his death. John patented the family farm at White Oak around 1876 under the recent Homestead Act. That farm stayed in the family until 1995.
