Biography

James was born on 21 Feb 1807 the fifth and youngest child of Andrew Anderson and his wife Ann Burley who lived in Turinsmuir, Guthrie. He was baptised a week later on 28th Feb. ^[1]

On leaving school James worked in the local pavement stone quarries.

At Aberlemno on 16 March 1832, aged 25 he married Ann Ferguson daughter to William Ferguson a journeyman gardener in Latch, Brechin. ^[2] They lived in Craigsfaulds, Aberlemno where earlier his parents had lived. Their first child was born there in 1833. By 1837 they had settled in the Cotton of Pitkennedy the rest of their children were born there. James continued there as a pavement quarrier.

James and Ann had seven children:

5. Margaret b. 1842 a twin who marr. James Geddes

6. James b. circa 1846

James continued to work locally as a freestone pavement quarrier. From about the birth of William, his fife, Ann, was troubled by nervous debility. After her death at Muir of Pitkennedy In Feb. 1864, James remained for some years at Pitkennedy. About 1870 he moved away and worked with his son, William, in a quarry at Mattocks, Monifieth. James lodged with James and Ann Whyte and family in Mattocks Village. ^[3]

James suffered paralysis about 1875 and moved into the outskirts of the parish of Dundee living at Baldovie, near Broughty Ferry. He died there aged 71 on 9 Dec 1878. ^[4]
