Joseph was born April 23, 1863, in Ontario. He was the son of Joseph Alton and Margaret Irwin. [1]
Joseph moved west to Alberta in 1900, part of a group of 80 which included three of his brothers and their families. [2][3]

In addition to being involved in the community through the Orange Lodge and the United Church, he served as a Reeve for the municipal district for 13 years, and as a Justice of the Peace for 39 years.
Joseph passed away November 12, 1953,[4][5] and was buried at the Hackett Cemetery in Lamont, Alberta.[6] He was survived by his wife and three children.
