He served two one year terms of service in the Virginia Continental Line per his pension application dated the 7th of April, 1831. He also indicated he was 81 years of age, his wife had died some 30 years ago, and he had adult children who were not named.
Ransom was at the home of Zebulon Allphin when he applied for his pension and the fact that he was the older brother of Zebulon is evidenced by his will dated 13th day of February 1833. This will was proven in Campbell County Court by two subscribing witnesses, the first John Allphin appeared on the 26th of August, 1833 and the second E. S. Armstrong on the 23rd of September, 1833.
In the name of God amen, I Ransom Alphin now of sound mind and memory, but knowing the uncertainty of life and being deeply impressed with the kindness and attention which I have rec'd by my brother Zebulon Alphin and wishing as far as lays in my power to compensate him for the trouble and expense which he has been at on my account. I do by these presents make this my last will and testament and it is my will that all my personal Estate consist in whatever it may after my decease shall belong to the said Zebulon if living if not to his representatives and it is particularly my will that if my money which may be due me by the United States in account of my pension may be received by the said Zebulon and belong to him and in order that there may be no misunderstanding about the reasons which have influenced me in this my will~I do hereby declare and acknowledge that I consider myself justly indebted to my said brother more than the back pay which may be due me between the times of drawing my said pension.~In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 13th day of February 1833.
