The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Chronicle, on 9 January 1930:[5]

FORMER POLICE PROSECUTOR, DEATH OF MR. H. ALLCHURCH
After a long illness, Mr. Herbert Allchurch, former Police Prosecutor, died at Parkwynd Hospital, Wakefield-street, shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday. Mr. Allchurch had been in ill-health since he retired from the Police Department two years ago. For the past six weeks he had been confined to his bed. On Friday morning he was admitted to the hospital suffering from a serious internal malady.
Mr. Allchurch had a long experience as a member of the police and detective forces, and at different times was successful in bringing to justice some of the most daring criminals in the State, and of sheeting home to the perpetrators crimes which aroused widespread public interest. He was the son of a policeman, and seemed to have inherited the instinct for hunting down criminals. He was born at Glenelg 62 years ago, and received his education at the seaside town, where his father was in charge of the police station. On leaving school he spent some time as a hairdresser's assistant. Later he entered into business as a grocer, in Hanson-street, Adelaide. After a few years he joined the police force, and his energy and ability brought him rapid promotion. At the time he was appointed to the detective branch he was the youngest constable to be made a detective in this State. He was sent to Mount Gambler, where his name came into prominence as the result of his being able to solve the Tantanoola tiger mystery, which had baffled the local residents at intervals for a long period. His elevation to the rank of detective-sergeant was well merited, and courage and astuteness in dealing with difficult matters of criminal investigations won for him commendations of judges and magistrates on several occasions.
Always of a studious disposition, he devoted attention to the study of law, and this stood him in good stead when some years ago he was entrusted with the responsible duties of Police Prosecutor. Prior to his appointment the work had always been done by an inspector of police. So successful was he in the position that, when it was decided to create a detached position of Police Prosecutor, he received the appointment, and at the same time he severed his connection with the detective force. In the discharge of his duties Mr. Allchurch won the confidence of the bench and bar. His conduct of cases was always marked by fair play and courtesy. He had five sons, three of whom, Messrs. Herbert, Clifford, and Leonard, went to the war. Clifford made the supreme sacrifice, and the other son died about 18 months ago. His other sons are Messrs. Harold Kingsley (a former member of the plainclothes branch of the police force), and Ronald Keith. Mrs. H. R. Highman is his daughter. He also leaves a widow and three grandchildren.
