Biography

Note: When Thomas Alford moved on to Pikedale Station on 17 March 1858 to manage the many shepherds who attended the sheep on that property, it appears he was accompanied by only his wife Elizabeth, a son Thomas aged 13 years and a daughter Mary aged 15 years.

Son Charles George aged 10 years joined them on 6 July 1858. Thomas Alford's Pikedale Diary reads - "Tuesday 6 July 1858, very wet, had breakfast, got the horses and rode to meet the dray from Drayton with Charley, met them one mile this side of Talgai, put Charley on Jimmy the pony and we rode into Warwick, 25 miles, poor Charley quite knocked up......".

Notes in the Diary show that "Charley" became immediately active in helping his father. Given Name: Charles George

Charles George Alford was born on 23rd May 1848 in Drayton, Queensland (Australia). He was the second son of Thomas Alford and Elizabeth Boulton.

Charles worked with the Bank of New South Wales for 59 years, commencing in Toowoomba as a junior teller. He served as manager of the bank at Mount Perry, assistant manager in Townsville and Warwick, and from 1878 to 1885 manager in Toowoomba. He then served as assistant inspector in Brisbane and from 1891 in Sydney in 1891 as inspector; later being appointed chief inspector. When Sir John Russell French was stricken by illness, he acted in the capacity of general manager for about five months. Charles retired in 1921. [1]

In private life Charles enjoyed several hobbies. He had a magnificent collection of minerals and also a collection of 700 pieces of Australian wood, polished by himself and members of his family. Photography also held a strong attraction. [1]

Charles married Elizabeth Nott on 2nd December 1873 in Queensland. [2]

Having been widowered for three years and aged 77 years, he passed away in 1926 in Mosman, New South Wales. He is buried in South Head Cemetery, Vaucluse. [3] He was survived by his daughter, Ethel, and three sons, Herbert, Leofric and Alan. Youngest son, Gordon had died in the First World War.
