James M Alexander was born about August 1, 1766 in Rockbridge County, Colony of Virginia, son of Robert Alexander (1710–~1783) and Esther Beard (1724–1779).

James married Margaret Hanna Lyle (born about January 14, 1776 in Rockbridge County; daughter of James Lyle and Hannah (Alexander) Lyle). Their children were:
