Biography

Ernest George was born on the 13 October 1886 at 133 High St, Aston Manor, Warwickshire, the son of Harry Alderwick, a master baker, and Clara Alderwick formerly Harman. The informant of his birth was mother C. Alderwick, of High St, Aston Manor. [1]

He was baptised at St. James' Church, Ashted on 5 December 1886. The entry in the baptism register read - Ernest George, son of Harry, a baker, and Clara Alderwick of High St Aston Newtown, was born on 14 [sic] October 1886. [2]

Ernest emigrated to New Zealand with his parents aboard the Doric in c. 1888. The family first lived in Feilding. They then moved to Woodville [c1892] and then further south to Pahiatua and Hamua.

The School Admission Register for Woodville School recorded Ernest attended the school from 10 September 1892 to 6 June 1894. His parent was named as Mr Alderwick of Woodville. Ernest left as the family was moving to Pahiatua. [3]
School Inspector Returns recorded both Ernest and brother Harry attended Pahiatua School from 1895 to 1899. They then attended Hamua School from 1899 to 1901. Sister Amy also attended Hamua School in 1901. [4]

From the Pahiatua Herald dated 25 October 1899, Pg 4 [in part] -
FANCY DRESS BALL.
The children’s fancy dress ball at Hamua on Friday last was a marked success. Eighty couples were present and the hall was beautifully decorated, the Chinese lanterns enhancing the effect. Mrs Ashford acted as M.C. The ball opened with a grand march by the children, and very pretty indeed was the sight presented by the little mites, some of them only six or seven years old, going through the whole dance, including the quadrille, without a mistake. Their costumes were a special feature of the affair. Everyone was thoroughly pleased with the evening’s entertainment, and in fact pleased only faintly describes the verdict.
The following are a few of the fancy costumes:- [List included] E. Alderwick, Cricketer; H. Alderwick, Baker. [5]

The family then moved to a farm in Puketoi.
Ernest first appeared in the 1908 Pahiatua supplementary roll. In that roll and in the 1911 roll he was living at Range Road, Pongaroa. Brother Harry was living at Puketoi [a few kilometres from Pongaroa] and working as a farmer. Looking at a map I believe this is two ways of saying the same thing.
In 1914 Ernest appears in two rolls. The first recorded he was living in Woodville and working as a labourer. Then in the Waimarino supplementary roll he was living in Rangataua [near Ohakune] and working as a labourer. [6]

From the Wanganui Chronicle dated 7 November 1917, Pgs 5 & 6 -
The following men have been called up under the Military Service Act:
First Division. Includes – Alderwick, E. G., farm labourer, Pohonui [south west of Taihape]. [7]

Ernest's attestation for general service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was signed in Marton on 23 November 1917. Personal details obtained from his records state Ernest was born on 13 October 1886 at Birmingham, England. His home address was at Gladstone Rd, Levin. Ernest had been working as a farmhand for P. Suckling, Pohunui (Pohunui PO, Huntersville). He was single and aged 31. Physically Ernest was 5 feet, 4 ½ inches in height and weighed 144 pounds. He had a fair complexion, brown hair and grey eyes. Health remarks stated he had had four fits but none in the last 8 years.
Ernest was a Private, No. 74927. He was posted to B Coy 39th Regiment on 5 March 1918. Then on 12 March he transferred to NZMR (41st Mounted Rifles) as a trooper. Ernest was promoted to Temp L/Corp on 19 May 1918. On 10 October 1918 he left NZ and disembarked ship the on 22 November at Suez and was posted to isolation at the camp in Moascar, Ismailia. On 23 November Ernest reverted back to a trooper. Ernest did not arrive in Egypt until after the Armistice was signed [on 11 Nov 1918]. He embarked a ship back to NZ on 28 Jul 1919 and arrived back on 11 Sept 1919.
Ernest was discharged on 9 Oct 1919. His intended address on leaving was Bridge St, Bulls [his parent's home]. Archives New Zealand: R22275009

Evening Post dated 16 Aug 1919, Pg 9 -
COMING HOME. ELLENGA’S DRAFT. BALANCE OF MEN FROM EGYPT.
The Defence Department advises that the Ellenga, with Returning Draft No. 279 on board, is due to reach Auckland on or about 28th August. The draft, which comprises the balance of the men from Egypt, totals 110 of all ranks. The complete list of officers, together with the names of n.c.o.’s [sic] and men who resided in or have next-of-kin living in the Wellington military district, is as follows: Included Alderwick, E. G., 74927. [8]

And from Wanganui Chronicle dated 19 August 1919, Pg 5 -
DRAFT FROM EYGPT. WANGANUI QUOTA.
There is expected to arrive at Auckland about August 28th a draft of troops from Egypt ... The following men are for Wanganui and district: Includes Alderwick, E. G., Bulls. [9]

In the 1919 Rangitikei supplementary roll Ernest was living at c/- Capills, Taihape and working as a labourer. In the 1928, 1935 and 1938 rolls Ernest was living at Mataroa [north west of Taihape] and working as a contractor. And in the 1946 roll he was living at Ridge Rd, Taihape and still working as a contractor.

In an article published in the Wanganui Chronicle dated 4 June 1936, Pg 6, about the inquest into the death of Thomas William Muir, farmer, the coroner returned the following verdict: "The deceased and two farmhands, John Henry Brown and Ernest George Alderwick, were branding and ear-marking cattle on deceased's farm at Tiriraukawa [near Taihape]. Deceased was in charge and was operating the bail end of the race. He was about to free a steer held in the bail. The upright of the bail was clamped tight with a 6ft. 6in. length of maire weighing about 20 lb. This wooden bar was operating on a pin. The beast, which was a fractious one, put its hoof on the end of the bar inside the bail which caused the bar to be thrown upwards, striking the deceased on the neck, thereby breaking it." [10]

And from the same newspaper dated 11 August 1936, Pg 3 [in part] -
TAIHAPE

The monthly meeting of the Taihape and District Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Friday evening when, the president (Mr. C. A. McLaren), presided over a satisfactory attendance. ...
Two new members, Messrs. E. G. Alderwick and A. E. Patrick, were elected members of the association. [11]

By the time of the 1954 and 1957 electoral rolls Ernest had moved north and was living at Horotiu [north of Hamilton]. He was then working as a labourer. In the 1960 roll Ernest's address was recorded as Park Rd, Horotiu.

Ernest George Alderwick died on 8 January 1961. [12]
