Major-General Andrew Aitchison served in India in the Bombay Army.[1] His cadet papers record that his father's name was William Andrew.[2]
Andrew Aitchison joined the East India Company Army as a cadet at the age of fifteen, arriving in Bombay on 3 September 1796.[3] He saw service in 1799 with Colonel Little's expedition in the Concan during the Mysore War; as well as service in Goa, the Deccan, Wynaad, Cotiote and many other locations across India. Andrew was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in the East India Army on 4 June 1814.[4] For several years Andrew served as Military Auditor-General as part of the General Staff of the Bombay Army.[5] Andrew was commended by Sir Miles Nightingall in a general order to the effect that His Excellency had "entire satisfaction at the zeal and ability with which this officer had conducted the important duties of adjut-general".[3]
Andrew married Martha Charlotte Terrington in 1811.[6] He was identified as the father of Charles Terrington Aitchison.[7][8]
Andrew's health suffered at times and he returned to England on furlough on 1807 to reestablish his health after years of active service, returning to India in 1811.[3] In February 1824 the Governor in Council permitted Andrew Aitchison to return to Europe for a period of three years on furlough "for the benefit of his health".[9]
On 20 July 1838 Andrew was appointed Major-General in the East India Company Army.[10]
Andrew died in Hastings, Sussex, on 28 February 1848.[1]
