Biography

Cynthia Adkins was born circa 1811 in Virginia.[1][2] Her name in various documents is given as Cynthia, Cyntha, Cynthy, Cintha, and Sintha, to name a few variations. She was the daughter of Bartlett Adkins and Mary Holton.[3]

Cynthia Adkins was married to a man named William Belcher on August 19, 1824 in PIke County, Kentucky, officiated by Justice of the Peace William Campbell.[4][5][6] They had three sons together.

Cynthia Belcher married a second time on April 24, 1835 to David Rowe in Morgan County, Kentucky, officiated by William H. Kendall.[7][8][9] In the 1850 U.S. Census they were living in Morgan County, Kentucky and both listed as being 39 years of age and with five children ranging in age from 15 to 2.[10] The couple had six children together, three sons and three daughters :

At the eve of the U.S. Civil War in 1860 David and Cynthia are a prosperous family living on 1500 acres in Morgan County with their three sons and daughter Sidney, aged from 23 to 12, and two unrelated farm laborers.[11] By the 1880 U.S. Census they are living alone and residing in Crackersneck (Newfoundland), Elliott County, Kentucky. Their son Jesse and his family live next door.[12] The change of address from Morgan County to Elliott probably didn't entail a physical move to Elliott County or even to a new home, as Elliott County had been created in 1869 from parts of Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan Counties. Neither she nor her husband David appear in the 1890 census (or any other documents) after the 1880 U.S. census, so it is assumed both died in the interim. Their location of their gravesites is unknown, but are assumed to be in the Crackersneck vicinity.
