Note

Note: Charles was about 8 years old when his family moved to Russell Co, VA. After they had settled there a few other families from NC followed, one of these families being the Doaty's. In April of 1802 he moved his family down the Clinch River to a place known as Gillenwater farm. At that time there were only about 10 acres cleared on the farm. Most of the bottom land was marsh and thought to be useless but once cleared proved to be valuable. He lived there for 3 years and as they had fever and ague very bad the last year he moved his family to Copper Creek in Scott Co, VA in the spring of 1805.

When he was 100 yrs old his family gave him a centennial dinner it was estimated at that time that he had raised 16 children, and had 107 grandchildren, 443 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren. His eldest daughter, Cynthia married young and moved west, and her children were not included in the numbers. His dinner was furnished with all of the good things the appetite of a man could desire. The table was about 200 feet long and at least 1000 people partook of its burden. He rode out on a wagon to church and after preaching walked the 1/4 mile back to the table where the party was waiting. [3]

Charles was the paternal great-grandfather of Maybelle Carter and maternal second great-grandfather of Helen Carter, Anita Carter and June Carter Cash. He was the maternal third great-grandfather of Carlene Carter, Rosey Nix Adams and John Carter Cash.
