John Adams Sr migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See Great Migration Begins, by R. C. Anderson, Vol. 1, p. 11) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
John Adams's origins are unknown. No evidence for his parentage has been identified.
John Adams arrived in November 1621 on the Fortune and settled in Plymouth.[2]
In the 1623 Plymouth Land division he was given one acre, having been a passenger on the Fortune.[2]
By 1627 -- and as early as 1625 -- he married "Eliner" or Ellen (______) Newton[3] and had a son James.[4] She was the only Ellen in the 1623 land division and there were no other known additions to the Plymouth population in the next few years. She remarried June 1634 to Kenelm Winslow[5] and was buried at Marshfield 5 December 1681, age 83.[6] (probably inflated).
The 1627 cattle division listed John, Eliner and James Adams.[4] John was listed in the 1633 list of freemen, but the listing indicates he was a freeman before 1 January 1632/3.[7]
John Adams died between 1 July 1633 when assigned mowing ground,[8] and 24 October 1633 when inventory of his estate was taken.[9][10]
The inventory, valued at £71 14s, was presented to court 11 November 1633. His widow was named administratrix, and three children were named in the court documents -- James, John and Susan, still minors.[11] The payment to son James was made by Kenelm Winslow [his step-father], recorded 26 December 1651.[12]

Disputed Parents and Origins:'
John Adams's origins are unknown. No evidence for his parentage has been identified. Adams is a common name, and there are many coincidental vital records that could refer to this John Adams, but lack documentation demonstrating a connection. Per Robert Charles Anderson in The Great Migration Begins, 1995 (p 12):
Banks has published some records for the name John Adams in London, but none of these can be connected with John Adams of Plymouth [Pilgrim Fathers 105].[1][13]
The John Adams born 7 August 1595 and Baptized 7 January 1595 Wemme, Shropshire, England[14] has not been proven or disproven to be the same as he who died in Plymouth Colony in 1633, and so has been disconnected from the Plymouth family.

John Adams Jr. of Plymouth took as his second wife, Elizabeth (nee Unknown). The name Elizabeth Russell and/or Elizabeth Phipping seem to be used interchangeably by researchers. The only Elizabeth Russell I've been able to find fitting the age and area is actually the half-sister of John's first wife Jane James. Jane's mother took as her second husband George Russell. They had four daughters by this union: Mary, Elizabeth, b. 12 Feb 1642/43; Martha; and Patience. However, Tingley [note 31], 326, indicates that Elizabeth married Thomas Palmer. [NEHGR 151:70].
Sharon, that FAG is for his son. I wouldn't bother adding the correct one for this John Adams as it literally makes more errors than facts it gets right. (wrong birth date, wrong death date, wrong name of wife).
The source, NEHGR33:410-413 , has been listed for several years, but I updated factual data appropriately from this source onto profiles for John Adams Jr. (Adams-509) and wife Elizabeth Russell Adams(Russell 2136) which had not been clarified completely. My emphasis was to reiterate this source and its importance highlighted in as easier to read format especially for those working on other genealogical sites hoping improvement to their data would occur.
This well documented genealogy of John Adams of Plymouth, Massachuessetts, might be of interest to those working on this New England Adams family. On other genealogy websites, there is confusion with some attached VA descendant(s) which does not comport with New England records. See Website: [1]
Adams-28455 and Adams-510 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same death date. They have the same wife - Worden is one of the unproven surnames for Ellen Unknown. The birth on -28455 is an unproven date listed in the bio of -510. The son John on -28455 has a strange birth listing (obviously incorrect) but they have the same death information.
