I was born in Scotland and moved to Hertfordshire as a teenager. I married in 1994 and have four wonderful children. In 2010 our family went on an adventure to live and work as international teachers. We lived in Abu Dhabi, China, Mongolia and Poland. Now I'm back in England and semi-retired and having discovered the joys of researching family history a couple of years ago, you will find me here most days building our one tree.
My family on both sides have several generations of Scottish coal miners and two of my great grandfathers were Steelworkers. I am incredibly proud of these families and the danger they faced everyday in their work. Some were seriously injured or lost their lives in the mines or works.
It crops up everywhere in my tree. From covenanters to ministers of the established church to the Christian Brethren and the gospel halls of my youth.
Wives and mothers of often very large families, dying young from complications in childbirth or mourning many lost children to diphtheria, TB or a host of other childhood illnesses. All the while working to contribute to the often meagre family income. I need to improve the biographies of the women in my lines. It's on the 2023 project agenda.
There is barely a family that didn't see a sibling or two or three leave for America, Canada or Australia. What happened to those folks? Were their lives better? What about their descendants, who did they meet and marry in the new world? Where were they from?
When my great great grandmother Margaret Gilchrist married William Peat two lines with over 20 surnames spanning back 200 years in one small place came together. At least seven generations lived, farmed, masoned, wove, smithed, preached and fought there. There is so much work to do on these lines but a lot has been done by great local researchers and genealogists. I expect it to be endogamy central as I build out the spouses of siblings etc.
I've only been here a couple of months but I love wiki-tree. For the kind of research I want to do its great. I am not too interested in deep genealogy but I can see its great for that too. I just want to build my tree wide and make as many connections as possible. I love to come across a profile with a well written biography and hope to improve my bios over the coming months. I love connecting unconnected branches or lone profiles I find in my surnames of interest. A couple have even ended up being fairly close cousins. I do respond to messages and am interested in hearing from anyone with similar interests.

I see we are related through John Pate, but i'm more interested in Margaret Gilchrist. I suspect my grandfather, John Gilchrist Reid, may have a connection to this part of the family, which would be fascinating as he married Elizabeth Stewart Pate. The Reids are a rather mysterious bunch - Dad was an only child and didn't talk a lot about his father's side of the family. I have a strong connection with the Pate side, as Dad's cousins all emigrated to NZ and we had lots of family outings.
Cheers Neill.

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Welcome to Wikitree. We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.
Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.
Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.
