It is not known why Irving is not listed on his parents 1930 census record,[3]
however the 1940 census shows him living in Forty Fort, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, United States with his mother, two younger siblings, and a maid.[2]
Irving and Betty Ohringer applied for a marriage license March 19, 1946 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, United States[4]
and were married May 2, 1946 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, United States.[5]
There are two records documenting Irving's enlistment in the United States Army in 1946:
Irving Abrams' enlistment record dated March 8, 1946 shows his birthplace as New York, his status as "single without dependents", his civilian occupation as "Tinsmiths, coppersmiths, and sheet metal workers" and his assigned serial number as 13212480 .[6]
Zolman I Abrams' enlistment record dated July 26, 1946 shows his birthplace as Pennsylvania, his status as "single with dependents" (although he is known to have been married then), and his assigned serial number as 13243934.[1]
Despite the differences, both enlistments occurred in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, were for the Panama Canal Department, show the same birth date and education level (1 year of college). In addition, both show "Enlisted Man, Regular Army, after 3 months of Discharge" as Source Reference (is it possible that he enlisted, was discharged three months later, and enlisted again using the different first name?").
Irving was living in Lackawanna, Pennsylvania when he died[7]
March 25, 1978. He was buried in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery in Dalton, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania, United States.[8]
Notes
First Name
Practically all records show his first name as Irving, however there are a few exceptions:
Zolman, seen on one Army enlistment record[1] may have been his original first name. More evidence for this is that his paternal grandfather's original first name was Zolman and he, too, was known later as Irving.[9]
Charles - Although the 1940 census[2] shows his first name as Charles, this is most likely an error.
