Several of my ancestors were involved in the western expansion of the US. A few were Mormon pioneers who settled in Utah, a couple were soldiers, and I know of one who was involved with and was probably an outlaw himself.

Hays City, Kansas was a rough town of buffalo hunters and soldiers of Fort Hays, and is the location of "Boot Hill" cemetery of 79 outlaws. Locals included "special marshal" and later sheriff "Wild Bill" Hickok, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, General George Custer & wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer, and "Calamity Jane" Canary. Elsewhere in Kansas were lawmen "Bat" Masterson & brothers Jim Masterson & Ed Masterson, Wyatt Earp & James Earp
