Many of my ancestors were pioneers of the west - mostly in Iowa, California, Washington, and Colorado. I am particularly proud of my great-grandmother who left Brooklyn, New York with her five children to homestead in Spokane, Washington. Although she was a woman alone with little to no experience in fending for herself in the wilds, she managed to successfully farm and to successfully raise and homeschool her children, all of whom went on to college.

Many of my ancestors went west by horseback and wagons, from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, Tennessee via Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and on into Colorado. Part of the gold and silver rushes, opening of land, and new opportunities.

When I was a kid growing up near Salem, OR, I would gaze at the pioneer on top of the capitol and wish I was related to pioneers. Turns out my grandma forgot to tell me I was! I was a 6th generation Oregonian. Pioneer surnames are BRAMWELL, PORTER, CHRISMAN and MARTZ.
