Martyn Mulford
In English records, Munford (also spelled Monford and Moford) is a variation of Montfort. The Mulfords in my own line appear in some early American documents as Munford and Mulford both. This is because many of us still pronounce Mulford, traditionally, as though there were "no L" in the name, using a nasalized N sound instead. In French pronuciation, Munford sounds much like Mulford, to English ears at least, and so it was written. Many French words came to be spelled with an L in this way.
