It’s Black History Month... so why Johann Runeberg as profile of the week?

C’mon, WikiTree...

I don’t know how such decisions on Profile of the Week are made, but this is a missed opportunity to make this site way more inclusive and welcoming of all genealogists.

Langston Hughes, Rosa Parks, Dennis Edwards Jr., ... all have birthdays this week.

But, sure, kick off BHM with yet another white dude. I suppose we should just be glad it’s not another a Confederate general...

Starting the month with a notable African or African American would have been desireable, but the month is not over. Let's hope there will be some appropriate notables in the next week or two.  Of course acknowledging notable people of color does not have to be only on "Black History Month" either!

Agreed!

My post stems from the fact that there was yet another WikiTree call for “how do we make our site more welcoming to other genealogists?”   Well, for starters... those in charge might want to consider kicking off BHM with a profile that honors a notable who has contributed much to Black history and culture.

Well said, Jana! Thank you.

I've been researching the Black men of the 54th Massachusetts of the Union Army for a few years now and I think we're going to find that it's very hard to connect many Black Americans through the "branches" of the tree, as it were. I think we'll find connections will be made at the "roots" by descendants. Very few of the 1,200+ men of the 54th connect into the tree, and not due to lack of work on my part. Those that connect are usually connected through a white parent, and that parenting was, unfortunately, rarely consensual. Definitely one of the challenges we face for Black American profiles as we try to connect all profiles to the big Tree.

It's the third paragraph which made me debate whether to flag it for racism or prejudice or something like that but my second thoughts were "When was the last time YOU were 100% PC, Susan??" and I took back the flag. Glass houses and stones, you know?

I think if you could list out a number of black or African-American Notables (found in Wikipedia) with lifespan dates, or even African Notables such as Nelson Mandela (much there to be respected and admired) it might be more attractive to positive responses ... an "attack" is a put-off; a list of black Notables would be a come-on. Yes, Jessica, it a "cuss word", a vulgar (I'm quoting from online) slang term defined to emphasize anger, annoyance, being upset -- often substituted as less offensive (LOL) than the F-bomb.

Anyway I'm dropping out of this discussion, it's too much for my old bones

The person who is nominated for Profile of the Week must be connected to the global tree, have a fully developed profile, and pass a review. Several profiles were mentioned above:

Malcolm X - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Little-2799 - not connected to the global tree

Hank Aaron - still living

Frederick Douglass - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bailey-7481 - has potential, although I'd recommend improving his biography a bit first

Maya Angelou - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Johnson-26692 - could be used, but typically they don't use the same profile twice in a row

John Coltrane - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Coltrane-277 - has no biography

Jack Johnson - not sure I found a profile for him, but if you know which profile you're referring to, show the link and see if it's connected, has a good biography, pictures, and would be a good candidate.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Johnson-66486

Probably this guy - Jack Johnson boxer - not connected to the global tree. If you like these as potential candidates, the first thing to do would be to improve them so that they could be used. Lots of opportunities to help if someone was interested.

And I'm not part of the committee, but I have a decent understanding of what they're looking for.

Eartha Kitt was also mentioned. She's connected to the global tree, but has almost no family and almost no biography.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kitt-29

And her profile is wrong - her LNAB should be Keith. I'm adopting it and will see what I can do to improve it a bit.

Whitney Houston has a profile, but it's not connected and there's a very small biography.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Houston-1287

For last month, there was a thread that discussed how they select the profiles:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/964646/january-2020s-example-profiles-of-the-week-lineup

Not sure if there's one for this month.

Hi Scott, Jimi Hendrix is connected and has a biography.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hendrix-634
Oh - he's a good one.

And Eartha Kitt now has a biography too. I rushed it a bit, but hopefully it does cover the highlights.

A small side note as a white American who used to feel like calling a white guy white might be racism. I've since done a lot of very humbling work to understand racism and build my racial literacy. I've learned that my upbringing - through public schools in Kansas, through exposure to Hollywood's media, through a million small papercuts really - lead me to a default place where I had very little racial literacy coupled with a dangerously high amount of racial arrogance, making it very hard for anti-racist people to even talk to me about race. We're often programmed in indirect and subtle ways to be very defensive when talking about race, so I'll try to keep this brief! The books and videos of Dr. Robin DiAngelo were a great starting point for me, and I want to recommend them to anyone interested in challenging their own biases when talking about race. We all have 'em! I read her relatively expensive, academic book What Does It Mean to be White? with a book group at a senior center in Seattle and she has since published a more readable, cheaper variant called White Fragility which became a bestseller at independent bookstores across the US in 2019. Thanks to everyone interested in pursuing anti-racism! heart

Rosa Parks was a profile of the week last year (2019)
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

Rosa Parks has a nice profile, but that's what I would generally expect from a Profile of the Week. Connected to the Global Tree, well-written biography, more than 1 photo or picture, nice background, etc.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McCauley-488

Unfortunately they try not to repeat the same profiles each year, so she's probably not going to be featured in 2020. But you never know...

I was privately hoping that Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly would get highlighted, as the anniversaries of their deaths ("The Day The Music Died") is today, February third.

Scott pointed out some of the issues we run into with featuring certain profiles-there aren't as many connected to the tree, or there aren't pictures, or the profiles are in rough shape.

The number one thing people can do if they want certain profiles featured as a connection anchor is to improve the profiles. Make sure they're connected, and that those connections are well sourced. Look for non-copyrighted images of those people to add to their profile. Write thoughtful biographies that are cited throughout. Then, on top of all that, share those profiles on G2G, especially on the monthly thread where we post our selections for the month. That thread isn't up yet for February because there was still some discussion on what we were doing for one of the weeks. I hope to have it up soon.

As far as Black History month, we try to look for celebrations, holidays, and such, but we can't cover all of them. Those aren't all international holidays, either, so what may be important in one area, aren't in another. When profiles are chosen, we are generally looking at what is happening on that exact Wednesday in history (the newsletter that includes that feature comes out on Wednesday) or at some very recent event, like the recent death of a notable person.

We have shared black notables in the past, and as Scott mentioned, we try not to repeat because there are a lot of notables to feature. Some examples are Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King, Jr, and Thoroughgood Marshall. We are always looking for more to feature! If you want to add to them, let us know, whether on the Example Profiles of the Week monthly thread or the monthly Notables post. I look at both and add to our list of future possibilities.

Why Runeberg at the beginning of this month? His birth is on February 5th and the Finland project had specifically sent us that profile as a future EPOW when he was connected. He is important to Finland. Finland has not had any EPOW in the finder, ever. We try to be fair to everyone. We won't hit every holiday and major event. We try. We'll be taking suggestions from this list and adding to our future options. We'll try to feature a black notable later this month.

The way this question was worded is not what we expect of a WikiTreer; there are certainly nicer ways to express hope in the featuring of a certain notable that do not include calling the national poet of a country another "white dude." Please be respectful in how you phrase questions and requests in the future.

A quick note on connecting Black Americans. Because of slavery, many Black family histories are completely erased at a certain point. In my experience of profiling several thousand Black Americans through the 54th Massachusetts project, I can tell you almost no one is connected despite vigorous multi-generational work. I get really excited when I'm able to go back two whole generations from Civil War soldiers, because even that is difficult work. In the few cases of a connection to the big Tree, it is almost always through a white slave owner father who raped a Black enslaved woman and had mixed race children, which is unfortunately common practice in Antebellum America.

So, having said that, to Jana's original point, requiring a connected profile for the profile of the week may be problematic if we'd like to use the profile of the week to improve inclusion of non-white genealogists.
