Why is Labrie is being replaced by Migneault. Advice before adding father of this pre-1700 LaBrie profile?

I can add a father to the profile of Jean Baptiste LaBrie. This is who I can add:

  • Charles Mignot dit Labrie (as shown on Ancestry) and now I'm told by a WikiTree genealogist that it should be Charles Migneault with no mention of Labrie so ALL my Labrie's are being wiped out by Migneault when they are merged.  This makes my tree go blank.  Please HELP!  I'm a Labrie and I feel I'm being wiped out in the 1800's.

These are the sources I am using:

  • I have a copy of his burial documentation on my Ancestry profile that states (Charles Labrie dit Mignotte) I'm blocked from coping and pasting it.
  • The information I have matches the Migneault profile I've been asked to merge with other than this particular document.

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

Hi Judith,

Since this individual was born in France and died in Quebec, I'd suggest adding both the france and quebecois tags to your post to get help for coordination for this profile.
I don't think it is really a problem - it is a spelling issue - and it can be so confusing - probably one or the other is a Dit name - either Labrie or Mignot/Migneault is most likely, and I have been in your shoes, it will be ok, look up all three spellings and track down the source that is most close in time to the person's birth and that will give you the best information - don't go by other's trees they may be wrong, use them for hints and do your own research.  Primary sources are documents that were made at the time of the event - not later compilations that may be in error.

God luck on your quest.
you have an exact DOB on his profile, and you are saying his father was named Charles per an Ancestry tree.  Sorry cousin, his father is clearly named Louis Mignot on Jean's marriage.
LNAB: The correct spelling would be «Mignot».

OLN: "dit" Labrie

Sources for Mignot:

- Fichier origine 350098

- both marriages and burial. All added with links to church records.

Hi Judith! I must admit, I'm a bit confused by this name "being replaced". Is it a name change or simply a cognomen?

And more importantly, what are the sources for this "replacement"? Could you please give references to the documents that show it?

No need to add parents to Labrie-482. You only need to proceed with the merge into Migneault-30.

Judith, this is often confusing when entering families with "dit" names.  Migneau (or alternate spelling) dit Labrie does not mean that Labrie is the final family name.  Whenever you can, read the actual baptismal record which will tell you what name the family used as a surname.

Perhaps one of the Québec group mentors could help you understand this better.

It can be confusing ... my ancestors on Dad's side were in the dit Lafreniere branch of the extensive Desrosiers family. My 2g grandfather emigrated to Maine from Quebec in the 1860s, called himself John Ashley,  and was buried as Zephirain Lafreniere. Have fun with it! Sources count.

Actually, his marriage record to Marie Boucher names him Jean Mignot.  Labrie is his dit name, which he didn't actually use much in religious records.

What you have here is a situation where over time families went by either the original name or the dit name, dropping the other (or keeping it in some instances and reversing the order in the dit sequence).

There is no evidence extant that his father used the dit name Labrie, so keep him to Mignot or variant Mignault only.
