I'm looking for any wikitree members who have family history similar to mine. The person in the attached profile sailed with her family on 'Skiold', Hamburg 1844 -> Nelson, New Zealand, then on 'Sisters' -> Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, then 'Palmyra', ->Adelaide, South Australia, Arrived 17 Jan 1845.

I don't know a lot about this journey. I'm curious whether any current Wikitree members can share family stories.

History of German Settlement in Nelson is a closed Facebook group you might see if you could join, as there was a reunion recently. If you also tag your question new_zealand , there may be members like John Lester-1454 who might be able to help. (I live just down the road from Sarau/Upper Moutere.)

Very good, thanks Fiona. Your suggestion gives me something to work with.

The 1844 passenger list is quite well documented

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/genealogy/Skiold.htm. I am interested in looking at who stayed in New Zealand and who moved to Australia.

http://www.theprow.org.nz/society/german-settlement-in-nelson/#.Xd-FrozRWf0 The Prow has accessible information but doesn’t really do passenger lists directly. The passengers are in the Skiold category, and you may be able to work out who left from this ship and the St Pauli by a process of elimination. In terms of research, the biggest headaches are the anglicisation of names and working out which name is the  preferred first name. Early births up until 1848 are also unavailable. The book, “The Road to Sarau” is in the local library, though not for loan. If you want me to go and have a look at it for you, I’m happy to do that.

Thanks again Fiona. I'm not asking that you look up library books.

I might approach The Prow directly for information. The ships I'm interested in going to NZ are St Pauli and Skiold. German migrants left NZ 1844 in John Pirie, Joseph Albino and Sisters. I can identify some passengers aboard Skiold who eventually arrived in South Australia. All 4 of Qualmann and at least 3 of Westphal families.
The offer still stands if all else fails. Good luck!

Someone has asked themselves the same question and found the answer: http://www.lynly.gen.nz/SPSkioldAZinAustralia.pdf (Germans who settled in Australia or Overseas). I can see a number of familiar names in this list, including my family.

I have used this researcher’s work before, but didn’t realise she had done this too. I’ve found that she’s quite accurate.

Hi Elisabeth

There are some good records online from the State Library of South Australia regarding ship arrivals and passenger lists.

Refer following website.
