28th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, United States Civil War

I would like to find more information about this Missing Regiment (notice the gap between 27th - 29th in sources) is there any good online sources?

We know Confederate Civil War veteran James M. Ware was captured during the battle of “Missionary Ridge” and we have his records showing the “28th” and that he was a 2nd Lt. It would be nice to see what happened to him during the civil war.

see:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:28th_Regiment%2C_Mississippi_Infantry%2C_United_States_Civil_War

It’s says US_CIVIL_WAR.

Battle Flag

28th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry was listed as part of the Fourth Brigade of Confederate Troops at Corinth.

Also his civil war duty mentioned in daughters bio Ama Parmelia (Ware) Depriest (1855 - 1942): https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ware-381

Excerpt “ Miss Ama Ware's father and brother were soldiers in the confederate army. While serving as a soldier her father developed measles and was very ill and was sent home. While he was on this furlough, a messenger was sent to Martins Bluff to warn the people the Yankees were coming.“

1. Need son Dorman Ware’s obituary. He was mentioned in the 1904 obit of his son Dorman, as still living, and he was in the 1910 (Vancleave post office) Jackson Co MS census with 2nd wife Sarah Goff Ware.

2. New update revealing it was the 28th Alabama see his ancestry record with ditto marks for James Merida Ware

Not finding anything on this unit in web searches. I searched newspapers.com as well and the only 28th Mississippi that is talked about in articles is the cavalry.
Definitely a gap between 27th - 29th

I do see the 28th cavalry Listed
With some help in G2g and the civil war records for James M. Ware it appears he was in the 28th Alabama. The ditto marks and reading his record is where we need help. We know his father was probably born in Alabama per 1880 census. We need to properly categorize his profile. Any help in researching the 28th Alabama would be helpful

I was looking at the US Civil War Prisoner of War Records 1861-1865. James M Ware 2nd (Lt.) captured at Missionary Ridge was with the 28th Alabama Infantry. Those were ditto marks under Ala Inf. Company G. etc.

Name: James M Ware
Side: Confederate
Roll: M598_81
Roll Title: Selected Records of the War Department Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War, 1861-1865

Ancestry.com. U.S., Civil War Prisoner of War Records, 1861-1865 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007.

So there probably wasn't a 28th Mississippi Infantry. At least, I haven't found one yet either. He probably wasn't with the 28th Alabama Infantry and the enumerator might have been a little sloppy with recording his detachment. There are a lot of ifs and probablys in his biography. Identifying the right "James M Ware" from all other "James Wares" is going to be very tricky.

I'd go back and try and track him from the beginning and follow contemporaneous individuals with whom he'd be associated. I'll double back on the records, too.

I believe your correct! I found the Alabama info to match also.  I need help updating his profile to reflect this. See https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers-detail.htm?soldierId=02801CDD-DC7A-DF11-BF36-B8AC6F5D926A

Where do you find him in this unit? (do you have a specific link?"

When I search NPS, it says "28th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry "Units of the Confederate States Army" by Joseph H. Crute, Jr. contains no history for this unit."

I can't find it in the list at Wikipedia either.

James Ware lived in Mississippi in 1833.https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/14430303?h=a04019 U.S., Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, 1800-1900

Best I’ve found so far and the daughters bio by the historian mentions him sick with measles in civil war.

Records show James M. Ware. The rank 2nd and the 28th doesn’t say cavalry or infantry. Also shows “Missionary Ridge” capture on the name above his name and his part is in quotation marks for his name

Here is the history of the Unit source

Confederate Troops at Corinth, Confederate Veteran, Volume 25, Issue 10, 1917, page 445.

Will have to look into Battle of Missionary Ridge to see which confederate regiments participated. If indeed the 28th cavalry or infantry participated. Need a source for this though
The records seem to point to the 28th Alabama. See under ditto marks on shared ancestry record link for James Merida Ware

Are you sure he was in the Infantry? On Fold3 there is no listing for the 28th Infantry but there is a Mississippi 28th Cavalry. Could he have been in the "28th" of a nearby state rather than Mississippi? A Google search, which I am sure you have tried, also does not show a 28th Mississippi Infantry.

There are quite a few James Ware's on Fold3 in the Civil War so one of those might be your guy but they are all listed in other regiments.

His son in law John William Depriest was in the Calvary so possibly James M aware was in 28th Mississippi Valvary?

James M. Ware’s son was a young teenage boy in the confederate navy. See him here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ware-2463

He is mentioned in his daughter Ama’s bio (the wife of John William Depriest) as having measles and on furlough by the historian

See John William Depriest here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Depriest-280

With some help from g2g it’s showing James Merida Ware was in the 28th Alabama. See under ditto marks on shared ancestry record link. His father was born in Alabama per 1880 census. Ay help categorizing better to reflect his proper civil war military service is appreciated.
