I suppose it is possible - I can't claim to know enough about physiology of humans or eels in that way, so I'll leave it to the experts to determine if it's real or candid camera.

George, it is an enjoyable read, but are you sure the story is true?  Or even that it was ever really published?

I tried the Google newspapers link but they do not have 1838 issues of the Yarmouth Herald.  (Edit:  I was mistaken.)

Yes, it is in the newspaper ( The Yarmouth Herald ) of 03 Aug 1838. I looked it up myself to verify. It is about the 3rd. page in and a little difficult to find as has a small heading. The father was a local teacher and farmer and considered to be very reputable. Along with the two doctors statements, it does ring as being a true story.

Oh my, that was interesting.  My mom used to say don't eat the apple seeds or you will have trees growing your stomach.  Hmmm wonder if they heard stories like this in her day.

No apple trees in her stomach but I had a child in my kindergarten class that put a dry pussy willow catkin up her nose.  The moisture allowed it to grow into a sprout and grow up into her nose cavities.  When she developed nose bleeds and they took her to the doctor he removed the "twig". The doctor said this also happens with children at this age who put peas and beans up their noses.  Apparently not an uncommon occurrence.
