I’m seeking help in documenting one of my Campbell ancestors. I can reliably trace back to a Jacob Augustus Campbell who was born in 1807 in South Carolina and died in 1881 and is buried in Osage County, Missouri. His father was a Robert Campbell, for whom we have very little documentation – we know he died and is buried in Gasconade County, Missouri, in 1835, and that’s about it (Find-a-Grave has a picture of his tombstone). His wife was named Nancy, although her maiden name is also a bit fuzzy (usually shown as Nancy Niece-Henderson). Beyond that, I’ve never been able to pin-down his birth date or location (web sites have his birth year around 1784/85, and location has varied between South & North Carolina, or Tennessee). This much I have confirmed with Ruby Campbell, a genealogist from the Clan Campbell Society. From there, this Robert Campbell is often linked to a James Campbell, who was born in 1746 in Northern Ireland, immigrated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1767, and died and is buried in York County, South Carolina, in 1810. If this linkage is accurate, we can then trace James back a few more generations in Ireland and Scotland. BUT, I’ve never been able to find any ‘proof’ that Robert’s father was in fact this James Campbell. If anyone on this site is familiar with this line of Campbell’s, I’d appreciate it if you could reach out with any further information. My job takes me to Salt Lake City a few times a year, where I have access to the Family Research Library located there, in case anyone has thoughts about how to research this Robert Campbell and find some type of birth or baptism record, etc. I’ve tried searching books they have on South Carolina (working on the unproven assumption that James was his father and he would have been born in that state), but so far have come up empty.
