Do you want to become an England Project Member in 2019? [closed]

The England Project is an exciting place to be at the moment! We have a few hundred active members improving and creating English Profiles. We have a strong sense of community and teamwork, and a great structure so members both new and old work in their areas of interest. We connect, source, and improve bios within our Counties. We correct data errors, improve old Gedcom profiles, and encourage ONS and OPS studies, among many other things! Does this sound like something you would like to be part of?

You will begin with our unique Orphan Trail (read about it here), which is the gateway into the project. The Trail has a two fold benefit: it improves the health of our tree and, if you need it, helps you with profile formatting and/or using some quirky English sources!

Not only is England an exciting project to be a part of, but our Orphan Trail is a fun way to join the project! And once you have finished the Trail, you will be able to join any of our other teams, and make connections with members who share your own interests.

If you are interested in joining us this year, please ANSWER below this post (not comment, or we may miss you!). I will respond with joining instructions and get you into our England Project Google Group, which is how we all communicate. Once you’re on board, we will let you know how to start your Trail.

Every improvement to every English Profile benefits our Global Tree, and we look forward to having you on the Project!

I'm interested in joining but wondering how much time I'll be expected to give, please? - I do transcribing & checking transcripts of Parish records, as part of a team in my home city already, as well as other projects. Thank you.

Hello Jennifer,

You need to be logged in so I can send you a message. Can you please log in and re-post?

Hi

I've been advised to join this group regarding creating profiles of ancestors born pre1700.

Not sure what comes next ...

Thanks

I'm dropping the England tag, because all it is giving me is a News Feed full of people by the name of England. There needs to be a way of separating news from the England project, and England name.
by Ben Molesworth G2G6 Pilot (165k points)
Hello Benjamin,

I'm still trying to find someone who can answer your original question, but I completely agree with you. As far as I know, only a leader can change tags, and I'm not sure how the process works. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will come along and give you a better answer.

Fran :)
Thank you Fran. I'll rejoin afterward. I look forward everyday to seeing who has been doing things under the tags we have in common, and this easy to make mistake is filling my page instead. Ben.

Hi Benjamin,

When you click on the England tag on your profile the first thing that comes up is a list of people who are also following that tag. You'll see that, currently, 951 people are following the tag.

You'll then see two links at the top of the page:

  • The first is to genealogy content which is where you may be seeing the list of people with the last name of England
  • The second link is to this G2G forum where you'll see the vast majority of questions asked using the England tag are involving English profiles. It is probably this link that you'd might like to bookmark.
You can also go directly to the "My Feed" tab at the top of your G2G page for all questions relating to tags you are following.
In terms of participating in the England Project, there is more to it than just following the tag. Whilst we have 900+ England tag followers we have about 300+ England Project members. Project members join a team, liaise with other members, agree to make at least one contribution towards the project's goals every six months, and agree to respond to a check-in that is held every six months. It's a lot of fun and people really learn a lot from each other in the process. We'd love to have you in the project if you are interested. Just say the word and Fran will help you out.
Best wishes,
Susie (England Project Co-Leader)
Thank you for the follow up. I'll fix that up. At this stage I was hoping to focus on the Molesworth line, but I have to get approval for pre-1500 to go much further. I have been working for a while to try and prepare for a pre-1500 approval.
So that actually wasn't a fix. As I see it, the first step in joining a project, is to follow all the news from the project, so you have a means to know what is going on, so you can participate. But because your tag is a single word, my newsfeed on England is filled with people called England, which is irrelevant to the project. So because I can't follow the project without junking up my newsfeed, I can't join the project.

I think that there may be a small mix-up in understanding here :) If you are receiving information on the England surname by following the England tag, it is likely that you are noticing this on the Wiki Genealogy Feed, which shows the most recent edits to profiles with the surnames that you follow (the same thing as tags). I just looked through the G2G tag for England, and I found no recent postings in regards to people with the England surname whatsoever. Could this be the mix-up?

If this is the issue, you could bookmark the G2G tag to keep up to date without having to follow the tag itself if you don't wish to receive England family notices.

Regards,
Amy (England Project Co-Leader) :D

Thank you. Yes, that is what I am talking about. And it concerns me that this may continue to be a problem, because the England project site is still recommending people to include the England tag, and a good number of people are doing so every day from what I can see. Each of these people will be now receiving a newsfeed full of England family genealogy. If the tag was changed to England_Project, before you get too many more followers, it would make it easier now, rather than trying to fix it later, or rather than further discouraging other people from participating in the project. I do want to receive a news feed from the England Project.

A little slow getting started here (my 91-year old widowed mother fell at the beginning of July and I'm her only child ... She's been in a back brace and a lot of pain and lines alone and I've had to go over there a lot).

Want to do the orphan trail.
by Mark Hankins G2G Crew (470 points)
Hi Mark,

I can relate to that - my mom is 99, lives alone (due to extreme stubbornness), and is always hurting herself somehow. Hope your mom feels better soon :)

Thanks!

Hi I would be interested in joining the project to improve my source referencing as I have uploaded my Gedcom file and now need to go back over it to add bio's and sources, which I have started to do.  I am also part of the cemeteries team and The Great War and WW2 projects.  So expect a slow progress if that is ok with you.

Regards

Hi Fran

I would like to be added to the England project.  I did answer yesterday but for some reason my post ended up at the bottom of the page so may have been missed.  I do not  have a lot of time as i am also a member of the Great War, WW2 and Cemeteries projects as well as trying to sort both mine and my husbands personal trees out.  I am also trying to set up a free space page for Kirkby Merseyside, my home town but it is not ready for the project yet.  I need help with adding sources properly to my family trees as I just dumped everything as a GEDCOM file and so I believe the Orphans Trail will be a great help and I am interested in the Merseyside  Team as well if I have time.

I too would very much like to volunteer to be a part of this group.  I have family interests in this particular area of research and if I can help the community and myself in the process then it's a win, win, in my opinion. Thanks.

The vast majority of my ancestors discovered so far are from England. Roots in Maldon, Hereford, South Molton amongst others. I'd like to help the England project :)
