I would like to have contact with related wikitree members. I know my first cousins and some second. I want to find those who are further out who are active members. Any suggestions?

One simple way to find relatives is to trace a line of your ancestors back until you find one with a different profile manager and then go back down this line till you get to present times.  Then you can see if  any of them active or if not, you can look at the PM and see if she or he is related by sending an e-mail to that person.  Not certain to work, but if you try it several times, I'd bet you'll find some.

I have used that approach, but it is a little slow. I was looking for a magical way to do it. I read  a similar question and the answers from 2017, but there was really no solution. I was hoping someone had designed something that would search across generations horizontally instead of vertically.
It will be even harder now because living family members are now unlisted.
But profile managers will not be unlisted.
Search engines don't search on the vertical or horizontal, they search by matching the criteria and it's on a yes/no basis and you will still need name, locale, date/era entered as the terms to find people
OK, so you are telling me that the search I want is not available, I suppose.
I don't think there is a magical way to search across generations horizontally, no, row fashion. Generations are built columnar fashion. To locate a 3rd cousin there has to have been the vertical columnar line of descent from a great-great-grandfather, for instance.

You and your 3rd cousins would all share a line of descent. But you need a key word or key words -- NOUNS -- to identify who those 3rd cousins are, for instance, and that would name at the least, a birth year, a location lived in, a parent's name for instance, or perhaps a snippet of DNA by all its ID code. Whether they are PM at WIkiTree is another whole thing.

Whatever else you yourself will have to invest time and energy and effort into directing any search, selecting nouns, refining the terms used in the search, collecting and organizing and storing the results of a search. You cannot escape that.
I don't believe that's quite correct.  If you're looking for WikiTree members, you can set your privacy level as you wish and other members will see you. It has to be that way or DNA comparisons could not work.

Are you talking 1700's or 1800's or 1900's in United States or Canada or UK or where? Such information as era and locale might assist others in connecting with you and given you do know the eras and locales you could examine the various surnames lists for profile in that locale and era

At the moment, this moment, there are nearly 3,000 Tomlnson profiles globally speaking including United States; There's about 580 Voorhees, 6600+ Humphrey, and nearly 9,510 Herny

One approach is to examine the census of one of your own profiles and then examine that same county or province for others with that surname, and then select some to find out if they are also listed as profiles at WikiTree

What I am trying to find is active / living wikitree members with whom I share an ancestor.

Also, look under your "DNA Connections" on your ancestor's profile pages.

Yep, that is one of the things that got me started on this quest - finding the DNA connections and following that to profiles and thus far, on the several I have tested I do not find anything!  I think my ancestors did not have much DNA to pass on - and that they did not make a lot of descendants.
