My Grandmother's adoption papers say she was born Anna Belle Butler on 15 JUL 1909. She was adopted by  George and Hattye Farrin on 8 OCT 1915. Any info on a Butler family in the vicinity of Cairo who may have put a girl up for adoption or had one taken away?

John Bruce Butler would have to have been 10 when Anna Belle was born in 1909 so highly unlikely he could have been anything more than a relative. I was hoping my half cousins DNA (mt U3b1) which is shared with Anna Belle on the maternal line might provide the solution as it did for me when I had my DNA tested and was able to confirm who my dad's biological father was. Anna Belle is the only ancestor who my half cousin and I have in common. Almost all the names of those who share that DNA group have Russian and Polish sounding names and nothing resembling Butler as her adoption papers say was her name. Anna Belle always said she was half Native American either Crow or Cherokee depending on what she was drinking during the day I suppose. DNA proved that wasn't true. I'm suspicious that Butler might not have been her actual last name and may have been simply used by the court. That's why I'm hoping the circuit court unseals those records. Thanks for the hints though!   Jim

When I did the search for Butlers in Cairo it came up with four. Three of them were female.
You are really good at this stuff. I'd really like to believe one of those Butlers may be Anna Belle's family but unless their family has someone on one of the DNA test sites it's unlikely I can prove it.
Gotta love those Butler family names don't you? "Cornfut", "Glem", "Comfort Edgar". Boy if that doesn't sound like the came out of a scene in "Deliverance" nothing does.
It may be one of those Butler women could be where Anna Belle inherited her "free spirit" or it could have been a a little bit of hanky panky with the help like you said.
I'm going to have to dig out Anna Belle's adoption papers tomorrow and see if this Judge William Nichols Butler can somehow be tied to Anna Belle's adoption. If I research him a little and see where he presided and if his home was close to the Farrin home or I can find contact between him and Anna Belle's adopted parents George Merless Farrin and his wife Hatty Guion Farin. You Amaze me Betty! You find a way to present more possibilities I hadn't considered.
Hello Jim, I live in Queensland, Australia. I am doping research on the Colquhoun Family and Farrin family is in it. Do you have information on them at all that would help me.

Kind regards Kay
Kay, I don't know how helpful this may be but, here's a little of what I have George Merless Farrin was born in SEP 1865 in Mississippi. His wife Hattye B. Guion Farrin was born 31 MAY 1866 in Illinois and died in Cairo 3 JUN 1925. They had one biological daughter Mabel born 28 DEC 1894. My grandmother (their adopted daughter) had a number of photos my cousin Mark only recently sent on his Facebook page. One of the individuals identified in the photos was a Farrin Allen Hillard. He obviously was a military man and was listed as being stationed on a ship in the 1920 census and I found he served in WWI and WWII and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. I can't say for certain what his relationship was with George but it is obvious he was related. I hope this helps.
