March came in as a lion here in Kentucky so we're hoping it will go out like a lamb! It's good to remember that we are a global project, and others may be enjoying summer weather, or be colder and more stormy. It's great to interact and see how it is in different spots across the globe!
Profile Showcased:
The Portugal Project strives to not only develop and improve those older Portuguese ancestors; but to develop an all around stronger presence of Portuguese profiles. One profile that shines was worked on by Filipe Barroso. Filipe joined us in December of 2018. One of the profiles he has improved was that of António Caetano "António" Egas Moniz. On a more personal note, he also worked on his own lines (see Eugénio Rodrigues Costa Real).
Overlapping Projects:
Jelena Eckstädt has been working on a project that overlaps our purview. She came across a list of people that attended the ''Church of England'' in Madeira. Some of those people listed were born in Portugal. If you want to improve those profiles, or help her create profiles from the list, let either of us know!
Research Tips:
For those newer to researching Portuguese records there is a great article online about common misconceptions. "10 Reasons Why You Can’t Find Your Portuguese Ancestors" was written by Melody Lasalle in 2015 but has valid points that are still relevant.
WikiTree Community:
WikiTree has formed an amazing community based on trust, collaboration and proven research. Let’s support our fellow WikiTreers – take a moment and go to a member profile, click on contributions, and then click on a thank you. You can also go to a profile they are working on a put a positive comment. You can pick Jelena, another of us in the project, or just a random WikiTreer. It’s nice to be a little spot of sunshine in someone’s day!
Holidays for March:
March 19th, Father’s Day, Celebrated on Saint Joseph’s Day (Not a public holiday). In the United States we have Daylight Savings (not an actual holiday or celebration) and St Patrick’s day (March 17th). Our Father’s Day is not until June. Australia has Labour Day (WA: March 4th , VIC March 11th ), Canberra Day (March 11th), Public Holiday (Adelaide Cup, March 11th).
Ways to Help:
If you are looking to expand your research into a new area consider joining us. You don't have to read Portuguese to participate. We have profile maintenance categories that can help you along, and several people in the project that are skilled in translations and finding record. Many of the older Portuguese ancestors can be found via a Google search performed in English. You can use your skills to:
- Research a profile and take notes
- Write a biography based on someone's research
- Apply advanced styles to existing profiles
- Help create profiles that aren't on WikiTree yet
