Migration Category Updates

Migration Categorization was approved back in May of 2018. A few months later, a policy update was approved that all topical categories use the Location, Theme format (which occured in Sep 2018). In an effort to bring the migration structure up to the current standards, the migration documentation has been updated to reflect the correct naming of all parent level categories. This will apply to all levels of the migration structure, except the expected landing level category (in which most profiles should be placed) which will remain in the format "Migrants from ... to ...".

[[Category:Migration]]
[[Category:Country, Emigrants]] (Originally "Emigrants from Country")
[[Category:AdminEntity, Emigrants]] (Originally "Emigrants from AdminEntity")
[[Category:AdminEntity, Emigrants to Country]] (Originally "Emigrants from AdminEntity to Country")
            [[Category:Migrants from AdminEntity to AdminEntity]]

[[Category:Migration]]
[[Category:Country, Immigrants]] (Originally "Immigrants to Country")
[[Category:AdminEntity, Immigrants]] (Originally "Immigrants to AdminEntity")
[[Category:AdminEntity, Immigrants from Country]] (Originally "Immigrants to AdminEntity from Country")
            [[Category:Migrants from AdminEntity to AdminEntity]]

The CategoryInfoBox Migration template will also need to be updated, but will only be done after the categories are renamed. With the help of EditBOT, these changes can all be automated. If there are any concerns, please let us know!

Steven, I have looked very carefully at the way the Migration Template works and have written up my thoughts in a PDF file, which I have attached to my profile.  The file is https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/0/0c/Cowan-1884-1.pdf.  I took a lot of time to prepare the note so I hope you will take time to think about it and let me know your views.  Regards, Malcolm Cowan
Malcolm, the PDF is only viewable to people on the Trusted list of your personal profile.  You may want to move it to an open profile so others may read it.
Hi.  I have uploaded the file again and attached it to a different profile.  See revised version of my message.  If it still does not work for you, let me know.  Regards.

Malcolm, a couple of notes:

1. On the first chart, I think the template you mean is "CategoryInfoBox Migration", in which case there is also a connection from "Emigrants from England" to "Immigrants to Pennsylvania from England", which is not noted on your chart (shown in red).

2. This is the same on the second chart (shown in red).

3. By introducing the intermediary category in your proposal, which was previously considered during the original migration proposal, this adds an extra layer of complexity three way. The first is the connection from the intermediary categories to the Country parents (shown in red). The second is the intermediary categories to the AdminEntity/Country categories (shown in purple). The third, is the categories from the connection to AdminEntity/Country categories to the immediate country categories (shown in orange).

The issue here is that by introducing the intermediary categories now causes a two new structures of categories (new streams) in the same categories. So in "England, Emigrants" we would expand from the original two paths to now having four paths (new shown in red, original in blue):

United States, Immigrants from England

England, Emigrants to United States

County Durham, Emigrants

Pennsylvania, Immigrants from England

I noticed from examining the categories that the Migration template creates that the link shown by the red line does not exist.  There is an asymmetry in the structure.  Perhaps this is a problem with the Migration template.  In any case, I think the additional cross-connections you show are unnecessary and inappropriate. Whether you choose to accept my suggestion or not, I still think the problem with the existing structure remains.

hi Steven,

So for the category French Immigrants to New France, what, if any, changes should be made to it?  Haven't really been following discussions on this topic.  There has been discussion with French roots project on eventually breaking it down further to give province of origin sub-cats, but that is on back-burner for now.

I am putting Nouvelle-France and not New France in the location name as that was what it was called, if we are grouping profiles, we don't really want separate language structures for locations, to my mind.  Else someone will come along and put people on one side or the other, and we wind up with 2 groups instead of one.
Danielle, the only issue I can see with that structure is the mixing of languages. While the landing-level could be in the native language and linked to an english parent, many English speaking members may not understand what Nouvelle-France means. I admittedly had to look it up the first time I saw it, even though I felt foolish after doing so...

I know this is something we struggle with across other categories as well, but I would suggest leaving the landing-level category with Nouvelle-France, then the rest as New France.

Do you think that would work?

Would this suit more?  Canada, Nouvelle-France is already a category in the tree structure, with no translation in existence.  (Wouldn't want one either. wink)

[[Category:Migration]]

   [[Category:France, Emigrants]]

      [[Category:Normandie, Emigrants]]

         [[Category:Normandie, Emigrants to New France]]

[[Category:Migrants from Normandie to Canada, Nouvelle-France]]

         [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants from France]]

      [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants]]

   [[Category:New France, Immigrants]]

[[Category:Migration]]

and shouldn't there be an additional category in between these?

[[Category:Migrants from Normandie to Canada, Nouvelle-France]]

         [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants from France]]

Would think we should have [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants from Normandie]] in between there to have it complete.

OK so - lets see if Paul Desmarais, father of my first Michel Desmarais (this side of "the pond") would get:

[[Category:Migration]]

   [[Category:France, Emigrants]]

      [[Category:Saint-Sauveur, Emigrants]]

         [[Category:Saint-Sauveur, Emigrants to Nouvelle-France]]

            [[Category:Migrants from Saint-Sauveur to Canada, Nouvelle-France]]

        [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants from Saint-Sauveur]]

         [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants from France]]

      [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants]]

   [[Category:Nouvelle-France, Immigrants]]

[[Category:Migration]]

right? or does Paris go in there somewhere?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Desmarais-7

what about my one guy, born in Norway - married in Nederland and died in Province of New York, formerly New Netherland when he came over?

does he get both migrations in there?

[[Category:Migration]]

   [[Category:Norway, Emigrants]]

      [[Category:Fredrikstad, Emigrants]]

         [[Category:Fredrikstad, Emigrants to Nederland]]

[[Category:Migrants from Fredrikstad to Nederland, Amsterdam]]

        [[Category:Nederland, Amsterdam, Immigrants from Fredrikstad]]

         [[Category:Nederland, Amsterdam, Immigrants from Norway]]

      [[Category:Nederland, Amsterdam, Immigrants]]

   [[Category:Amsterdam, Immigrants]]

[[Category:Migration]]

then the whole thing again to New Netherland?

no Navarro, St-Sauveur is not a French province, we're not drilling down to cities.  Even less to parishes.

For Netherlands, you'll have to talk to them about that, don't know what they have set up or agreed upon.

Whoops totally my landing not my take off for him!  I have to be more careful - ok so

[[Category:Migration]]

   [[Category:France, Emigrants]]

      [[Category:Île-de-France, Emigrants]]

         [[Category:Île-de-France, Emigrants to Nouvelle-France]]

            [[Category:Migrants from Île-de-France to Canada, Nouvelle-France]]

        [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants from Île-de-France]]

         [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants from France]]

      [[Category:Canada, Nouvelle-France, Immigrants]]

   [[Category:Nouvelle-France, Immigrants]]

[[Category:Migration]]

ok that should be what I need then I bet

So they work with the project people to set up the categories? Ok good I will see on the project page what is there
Île-de-France is a special case, don't go there yet please.  It applies to more than just the era I am speaking of.
ok, just trying to understand the way to set these up, do not know exactly where many of my immigrant ancestors came from exactly - those two I did - will mess with a few more I do know - lets see Orkney..will have to figure that one and see what is out there -
