For those of you interested in getting involved in a one name study for your surname, consider joining the One Name Studies Project on Wikitree. Additionally, the Guild of One Name Studies is a great resource to help you with this project.

I have found the administrator for the project associated with my surname , Peter Lockwood, to be extremely helpful in helping me document & expand my tree. I'm sure it will be the same with your surname. This knowledge has been instrumental in allowing me to contribute to the Wikitree One Name Study Project. You may be suprised how much you can learn about your family by participating.

Yes everyone is welcome in the one name study project, also you can on wikitree link to a DNA project, if you have one. The project here is very informal, we all study our own names, but it does help wih publishing your work, a key part of GOONS philosophy, you may even find cousins to help as it seems Peter and Douglas have.

HI Doug (our newest leader!),

So, what about Smiths?  Neither one of the links you listed have Smith, Smithe, Smyth or Smythe. I would be happy to lead a Smith one name study on WikiTree.  Can you give me a start-up and I will happily be the contact for whatever you devise?

I basically do this on my SmithConnections.com Northeastern DNA Project except that the traditional research is integrated with yDNA tests.  We have 74 Groups of Smith yDNA tests that match the other tests in their family group, but they don't match any of the the other 73 yDNA groups.  There are also a couple hundred yDNA tests that do not have matches yet.  DNA is helping us untangle the many immigrant lines to America.

Please let me know how to get a Smith study started.

Edited because I don't want to subscribe to the Guild.  I better stick with WikiTree.

Hi Kitty the Project page is the best place to start, or from the My WikiTree menu Surnames find the create a name study or DNA project, fill in the form, adding up to 3 variants remove the DNA line if you are not doing a DNA study, click the create button and the category is created and a free space page, every profile in your study can now have the [[Category:XXX_Name_Study]] added to the Bio text box and will show up on your one name study page.

Be sure to select a Smith surname, if you use your own name it will set up a Cooper Study, any questions about ONS on wikitree please ask me.

Hi Kitty

Welcome to the world of One Name Studies. Rhian's advice is spot on. Additionally, you can check out other ONS studies on Wikitree or look at the one for my surname on the Guild of One Name Studies for set up ideas:
