My name is Annette von Brughan and I live in South Africa. I would love to help record cemetery records. HOWEVER, there seems to be uncertainty among municipalities whether gravestones may be photographed/recorded due to the privacy question. I initiated a project last year but have still not received permission to do take photos in the cemetery. It all boils down to burocracy and red tape. There are a other genealogies societies that have recorded cemeteries but one needs to subscribe financially to participate. If anyone knows for certain how we can accomplish taking photos in cemeteries in South Africa, please let me know.

,

Hi Annette,

Thanks for your message and question. Might I suggest you contact the South African Roots Project? They are better equipped than I am to answer you. I do know that there are plans to contribute photographs and transcriptions of South African graves but do not know what bureaucracy, if any, has been involved.

Once you get an answer, feel free to come back here and post in the answers section and I'll be happy to help you join the Global Cemeteries Project.

Susie :-)

Yes! I've been helping with cemetery pages off and on, but I don't seem to have officially joined in yet. Would love to help making profiles; I don't get to cemeteries for photo-taking much at the moment. Thanks for running this project!

Hello, I am planning on going to cemeteries in Québec in 2019 and taking pictures of grave stones for my family members but would gladly take more. Areas of interest are Saint-Cuthbert, Beauceville, Saint-Benjamin to start.

I've been a part of the Global Cemetery Project for awhile now!  I  so enjoy visiting cemeteries, and have photographed all of the smaller family cemeteries and have been working on the bigger ones for awhile.  I will continue helping when I can to improve what I have already contributed and to photo new cemeteries in my area (mainly Hampton County, South Carolina) as well as surrounding areas and vacation areas (when I get to go on vacation that is!!)

I believe someone sent me a private message on this but not sure!  But YES! count me in!!!

Oh and I am already signed up with the Google cemetery Group!

Hi Liz,

That was me. You'll be on the South Carolina Cemeteries Team. I just need you to private message me your e-mail so I can get you added to the Google Group and introduce you to your Team Leaders.

Thanks!

I'm a Find-a-Grave member - so cemeteries are a thing for me.  I mostly work Essex and Middlesex counties in Massachusetts.  How can I be of assistance?
by
Of the 39 cemeteries in Danvers, only 8 are on the list so far.

Regards,

Jack Parker
This is probably because we have not added cemetery categories "pre-need," and have waited until someone adds the category to a profile, which has been the categorization philosophy with regard to almost all of the hierarchies (outside of place categories, many of which were set up in advance of use.)

Many of the WT cemetery categories have a handful or fewer profiles attached.

I used to participate in FAG quite a lot, but have trailed off in the last couple of years. I like having the ability to add sources and write a story of a life, linking entire families.

I make corrections to my FAG memorials often, but have had only spotty success when I suggest corrections on FAG, even when I send sources along to the memorial manager. This is one reason I've all but abandoned the site. There is not much merging of memorials going on any longer either. I used to be able to email info@findagrave and they'd merge memorials and cemeteries. Now it seems to be up to the memorial managers to work it out. That's not fun at all.
Tell me how to add cemeteries and I'll get started.

Regards,

Jack Parker
So if I create a profile - through normal methods and then add a tag for the cemetery, all will come out in the wash?

Regards,

Jack Parker
Yes. And if you visit the cemetery, you can take photos and add them to the profiles.
So have a look at Kenney-1602 and tell me what I did wrong.  She should be in Russell Family Cemetery, Boxford, Essex County.

Regards,

Jack Parker
Hi Jack. Thanks for your enthusiasm and interest in Global Cemeteries. I'll send you a PM to get you into the project. In the mean time, it looks like you are off and running which it fantastic!

Susie :-)

Jack,

On Kenney-1602 you have assigned the county cemetery category instead of the individual cemetery category. County categories are containers for the individual cemetery, not for individual profiles.

So, if the cemetery category doesn't exist, you would create it by adding the tag to the profile. [[Category:Russell Family Cemetery, Boxford, Massachusetts]]. If it is a red link after saving the profile, it needs the parent categories added: [[Category:Boxford, Massachusetts]] and [[Category: Essex County, Massachusetts, Cemeteries]]. Add a description in the category edit box and save it.

Susie explained your next step if you wish to join the project.

Forgive me, I'm dense.

I don't seem to be able to add the category in a fashion that is acceptable.

Regards,

Jack Parker
Jack, I'll add it to Kenny-1602.

Hi - I am Neil, I am interested in looking at cemeteries in County Durham in England, as I was raised in Sunderland, in County Durham (now Tyne and Wear).

A lot of information exists in various places for cemeteries in the area, I would like to see it in the context of wikitree, hopefully connecting people to the tree.

I would be like to be involved in whatever capacity is most useful to the project.

I have been working on adding Lanark County Cemeteries since joining in December.  I am part of the Canada Project and didn't realize I should have joined this group as well.  My apologies if it's caused any issues.
by Amy Gilpin G2G6 Pilot (218k points)

Hi Amy,

No worries! The Global Cemeteries Project has been recently "rebooted", and efforts are underway to hopefully make things easier.

I looked up Lanark County, and it's in Ontario, correct? If so, take a look at the Ontario Cemeteries Team page

Let us know if you'd like to join the Global Cemeteries Project and be a part of the Ontario Cemeteries Team, and we can get you set up.

Yes, I'd like to be added to the Cemeteries Team for Ontario.  Thank you
