Signatures of my 5th Great Grandfather, Alexander M'Nachten and four other deed signing witnesses from January 1765. These signatures all have diamond shaped boxes with the letters LS, LF or FS in them.  Does any one well versed in the Scottish Clans or Gaelic know what these might be?  The other signatures are: Duncan Read aka Reid, Gentleman (New York City), Peter Middleton, Physician (New York City), Archibald Campbell, Merchant (New York City) and Niel Gillispie, Farmer (Ulster County). Thank you.  Signature Photo

LS means locus sigilli, the place of the seal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_(contract_law)

It doesn't mean "sign here" but rather "this stands in place of a seal".

Thank you Ben :)

That just means “Sign here.”  It tells them where to sign.
