P.S. I thought his birthplace was Hawick, but Jedburgh is also very plausible

Thanks Lynda, but that's not it. His parents were Andrew and Jane Scott.

I am assuming that Andrew Scott served for New Zealand. Have you looked for his Military Personnel File in Archway? You may find William on a shipping list in Family Search and it's always worth checking out Paperspast.
