Duplication of Duncan Campbell requiring some attention

Andrew Campbell is currently set as the father of two different profiles for Duncan Campbell and Mary McCoy. If this was a simple duplication I'd just propose a merge and be done with it, except both Duncan/Marys are set as the parents of two different Robert Campbells, and these are verifiably two different people. One Robert, of Voluntown CT, started a branch I belong to, and the other Robert died in Augusta, Virginia. Both have been the subject of genealogical books which both claim Duncan and Mary as their parents, and both have children born in Coleraine, Londonderry.

Hugh Campbell, son of the Virginia Robert (Campbell-8679) has a note indicating that his father Robert was son of a John Campbell and nephew of the Robert, son of Duncan, but I can't find any paper trail establishing any such John, and in order to fit an extra generation into the timeline, some of these dates are going to have to be amended.

I'm going to keep poking this puzzle as I get the chance, but I wanted to write something publicly so I can get other input (and so I can post this notice on the half dozen relevant profiles). It's certainly possible either or both family history will wither under modern scrutiny.

For whatever it's currently worth, my Grandfather, for whom I have a fairly well reconstructed DNA kit, seems to have leaned strongly towards his Campbell side. I have a number of segments which don't quite meet "Confirmed by DNA" status, but don't leave much doubt we all relate to the Voluntown Campbells. Several of these matches also very tenuously match with descendants of Hugh Campbell, which leads me toward the suspicion that the Coleraine Campbells were in fact reasonably close relatives, rather than just a confused coincidence.

This lineage has been extremely confusing and I, for one, am most grateful for any assistance offered in sorting it out...

Andrew,

You are correct that this line is a mess.  False internet truth has taken over.  Many cite Pilcher's book as a source, but this book is wrong with respect to this family, as is Burke's Peerage.  The best online information on this line is Phil Norfleet's Campbell Pages

The only reputable source is Clan Campbell Society of America which has researched this line off-and-on for a number of years.

Attached is a link to several CCSNA articles on this line.  The first, and earliest has errors as well that were corrected in later articles in the attached file.  The latest CCNSA thinking starts on page 10 and reflects the Silas McCaslin ancestry document discovered years ago in Georgia.  The chart on the last page shows the current state of knowledge with respect to the McCaslin document.

I hope this works -->  CCSNA Doc Link

I don't want to ruin the surprise but CCSNA, with all their focus and resources, has not been able to reliably adequately determine the parentage of Duncan.

In addition, my own personal work as the head of the Campbell DNA project has shown that Robert Campbell (husband of Margaret Buchanan and father of Charles Campbell who married Mary Trotter) was not part of the same line.  In my CCSNA article written with James A Campbell, Tale of Two Duncans (CCSNA vol 43, No. 2, Spring 2016) shows that the above Robert was not the bother on John Campbell who married Grace Hay, as described in Pilcher, but a close neighbor.

I may also cross-post this message on some the relevant Family Sheets.
