These two profiles, Frederick Strong-3149 born Dec. 1863, died Feb. 1949, and Herbert Strong-2156 born 1890, died 1957, do not appear to be the same person.  Why do you want to merge them?  Merging is for two people who are duplicates.

You may know other information that can help the community here, like is Herbert a relative of Frederick?

If you have information about Herbert, you can add it by Editing his profile (which is open and it is fine for you to edit it).

Apologises....  Frederick is Herbert's father.  I was entering Herbert when he disappeared.  Found him under the no 2156 and think he disappear because he was connected to this other one. Thought I would have to merge them to get my Herbert back into my tree, but then got stuck.  So how do I get him back to my files so I can add further details.  Many thanks

Many thanks, have sorted it out
I think maybe you are confusing merging with connecting by a relationship. Two different people who are related can be connected by specifying the relationship between them. Two profiles which duplicate each other can be merged.

Hi, Pam,

Welcome to WikiTree!

Unfortunately, here on our world tree "sorting it out" does not include creating a new profile for an individual when one already exists. As you have the profile number, Strong-2156, for Herbert's original profile, that is the one that should have been connected to the father.

I have proposed a merge of the two profiles. If a profile exists for an individual, please connect that profile to your branch rather than create a new one.

Here are a couple of help pages that explain things much better than I can.

Help: Adding Family

Help: Editing Family Relationships

Also, "family history" isn't really an acceptable source and shouldn't be used to prevent the profile from being placed in the unsourced category. In the end, it doesn't benefit anyone and may ultimately cause a lot of extra work for other WikiTreers. If you have no sources for the profiles you are creating than they probably shouldn't be created until you do. If you do have legitimate sources (these are sources that other people can access either online or off and do not include unsourced family trees/genealogies or family lore) then they need to be cited on the profiles.

I know we all get anxious to add our branches to the tree and sometimes mistakes get made. Just slow down a little and you should be fine. Coming to G2G for help is always a good idea when you are in doubt about what to do. smiley
