Name of regions in countries

Question

I have a profile of an individual who migrated from Thuringia/Thüringen, Germany, to Virginia, US.  What is the policy on the language of the place name?  What I find is that there are categories called Emigrants from Bavaria and Emigrants from Bayern.  Bavaria/Bayern are one and the same place, so these two categories should be reduced to one, but which one?

Well, our protocol is to use the place name relevant to the person, so Bayern would be more accurate, no?

Since there is so much English on WikiTree though, you might consider if its possible to leave Bavaria as a category with a reditrect to Bayern. Otherwise, some well intentioned English-speaking member may recreate it.

Hi.  I have used the English form of the place name and set up a category Emigrants from Thuringia.  What concerns me is that there are duplicate categories - Emigrants from Bayern and Emigrants from Bavaria.  These two categories should be merged into a single category.  Have a look for yourself.

Yes, I see it, and I agree.  I was thinking about what might be done, but not about how you would reach someone.  I'll try to be a little more helpful!  

Generally I would suggest raising this to an appropriate project, but I also see duplicate projects: there is one for Bavaria, an a separate Bayern Project  I also see a Categorization Project.  

I suspect if you add tags to your question such as Bavaria, Bayern and Categorization it may catch the attention of someone who can help.

In the meantime, may you could add both categories to Laurie Schelhorn's profile?  Not sure.

Hi.  Thanks for your suggestion.  Actually Laurie Schelhorn migrated from Thuringia to Virginia.  While I was looking for an appropriate category, I spotted the Bavaria, Bayern variants of the migration categories.
