Challenge of the week: Add death dates and locations [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This week's challenge focuses on adding death dates and locations.

To comply with the GDPR that goes into effect next month, we may need to make some signficant changes.  See Chris' explanation of those here

As we might have to set all living non-members' profiles to Unlisted we decided to have a challenge to add death dates and locations to profiles that don't have them but should.  That will cut down on profiles that are unnecssarily set to Unlisted if/when we have to make that change.

Aleš has prepared a report of profiles from around the tree that might need death dates and locations added.. Will you try some?

After making a change, click the "challenge tracker" button and then the edit the status. This will record a point. The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

In view of the threat to close profiles without death records. should we just
estimate one for the 1700s and 1800s?  They would  certainly be deceased.
No, profiles back that far are not an issue.
Good.
Trackers are still showing last weeks challenge, not tracking today's.
We are discussing in the team and there will be another new error created for the challenge. So stay tuned.

78249 Suggestions Total 0000-0000
Date
131 No Dates - Open - Conflicting Dates on relatives 45864 45864
132 No Dates - Open - No Dates on relatives 78249 78249
133 No Dates - Open - Dates on relatives 350000 350000

This are new suggestions to correct. This are all open profiles without birth and death date. You can all edit all of these. The goal is to define dates.
In 133 suggestion, there is approximate date in info column based  on relatives +- 20 years, so those should be easyer to correct.

for 131 and 132 are no birth dates in nuclear family, so you should check further in relations.

I have two people who are mentioned in a sibling’s 2005 obituary as having predeceased him, so I know they’re both dead, but not idea when they died, except that it was aftr the 1940 Census and before 2005.  Normally I would enter “before 2005” for the date of deathl, but the system is insisting it will only accept a specific date.  What is the approved wapy of handling this so that these people are not mistaken for living non-members?

Put the date of the sibling who had the obitiary and click the radio button "before this date".

then put a sticker in the bio. See below.

{{Estimated Date|Death '''(based on REASON)'''}}

Hello!

I'd like to help, but don't know where to start.  Is there a particular priority? I don't really care if my work is tallied, as long as I am not duplicating someone else's efforts.  I'm not currently on a team, as far as I know.

Thanks!

Jaki

Added 4 new suggestions for open profiles without any date

I think this will be the final version of 130 suggestions. 131 and 133 are errors while 132 and 134 are warnings. Help pages are updated. to new suggestions. All statuses until now are corrected to new suggestions, so all you did until now will also count.

811 is not part of this weeks challenge. But you can still work on those.
I meant 118. Maybe it's time to go to bed. :)

I'll work on some. And btw "Click here for the list" is not a link, but Aleš' post and the Data Doctor's challenge at the top will get you there.

It looks like it is showing an error when no radio buttons are selected.

Not sure if we should mark those as false errors or change it to either certain or uncertain.  Some of the profiles I looked at did not have great sources for the info there...
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (843k points)
Be more specific. Which profile, which Suggestion. Here are some tricky conditions. Some can be only corrected by tam members.
It is almost all of the ones I looked at in 120 and 121 errors.

What are tam members?
Team members.
As explained on help page

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DBE_120

Those profiles have email set and are treated as Family Members. So unless you are a manger only Team members can fix those.
I checked and it seems what the false errors are were people who joined wikitree as their distant relative. Look who created the profile in changes. If the long dead person created it, then that is what is going on.

This is something the admins will need to fix??? because the database sees an email address for a long dead person. from 1790 no less? LOL

What will happen to undated profiles (completely undated) but with descendants born 200 or 300 years ago. You know. The earliest ancestors with no dates on them. Sometimes you've got to click around quite a bit before you can deduce that the profiles are for people who lived long ago.  Do we have to scramble to add dates to those? (lots of these profiles are orphaned). Thanks !

Can we please have a how-to guide on how to proceed when we find an undated group of orphaned profiles represented people who are presumed living (for instance: all the descendants of a couple who married in 1925 or later). Sometimes that makes quite a bunch of profiles.

Thanks.
by Isabelle Martin G2G6 Pilot (579k points)
Enter the estimated date. But be aware that the profile will become private at that point, So you should adopt them and orphan after. But don't do much more on such profiles, since they will probably become Unlisted in 2 weeks and is not worth your time, unless they are dead.
Will unlisted orphaned profiles be deleted?
Not immediately, but at some point yes. That is just my guess.
Thanks. It would make sense.

I did a few 119 open USA profiles and marked with tracker, working from bottom of the list up. Won’t have much WiFi the rest of the week.
