In my search for more information on Buford & Hardy families in Virginia, I have come across two great resources. There's so much information, it would take me forever to go through. Feel free to chip in and make some connections!

1. The Old Free State, by Landon C. Bell, History of Lunenburg County and Southside Virginia. Published 1927. 648 pages! https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/001874200 <br>

This also has records on the following Surnames in Lunenburg County, VA: Allen, Bagley, Barry, Bell, Betts, Blackwell, Bolling, Bridgeforth, Boswell, Caldwell, Coleman, Davis, De Graffenreid, Edmundson, Gee, Hatchett, Jefferson, Lee, Lester, McFarland, May, Harrison, Neblett, Stokes-Street, Taylor, Watkins, Williamson, Yates-Randolph-Cooksey.

2. Colonial families of the southern states of America : a history and genealogy of colonial families who settled in the colonies prior to the Revolution by Stella Pickett Hardy. Published 1911. 705 pages! https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE1978554

This source has records on 66 families, some overlapping with the source above.

Thanks so much!
Awesome finds, thanks for sharing!
You have to be careful and check for documented sources when using the "Colonial Families of the Southern States of America: A History and Genealogy of Colonial Families who settled in colonies prior to the Revolution" by Stella Pickett Hardy as documented research in recent years as proven information on some family lines listed in this book to be very inaccurate.
Thanks, Carolyn, that's good to know.
Thanks Carolyn. Good to know. I've only been looking at Hardy history and the other source has confirmed that information. However, my guess would be that since the authors last name is Hardy, information on that family is probably the most accurate. Some other families do overlap between the two - I would encourage you to confirm the information with the other source listed or by other means.
Carolyn, can you be more specific as to what was proven to be inaccurate and by whom? what are your sources for this?

Do they also talk about Virginia colony (which includes West Virginia)?

Yes! The Hardy family goes back to John Hardy born in England in 1613. His descendant Samuel Hardy is who Hardy County in West Virginia (Virgina at the time) is named after.
Thanks! Richard Stephenson established a home on the Bullskin Run in what is now WV in 1750. His property was surveyed by George Washington. It is now Burns Farm. He was my 7-times-great grandfather and one of his children was Colonel Hugh Stephenson, who served in the Revolutionary War under General Washington. Their graves are lost and I am going to visit there in April to learn more.
