My grandfather, John (middle name Henry, I think) shows on the 1870 United States Federal Census in Aubry Township in Johnson County, Kansas as five years old, adopted son of Daniel Hall Ryan and Hulda Ryan.  I don't know if the adoption was done there and if it was done formally/legally.  We have not been able to find any records.

My first line of attack would be an auDNA test. With the number of people doing DNA tests these days, you might be in luck.

Secondly, if you have a brother, a Y DNA test would be very beneficial.
